As the nights draw-in and the weather becomes cooler, we start to prepare for the Halloween season. For those brave individuals who are daring enough to go camping over this ghostly time, we’ve cherry-picked a list of the most classic and terrifying Halloween films. These are perfect to watch when you’re safely zipped away in your tent and tucked tightly into your sleeping bag, hidden from all the ghosts and ghouls lurking outside.

 

1. Hocus Pocus

Rated: PG

Guaranteed to put a spell on you, well-loved Disney classic Hocus Pocus sits first on our list. Follow the pesky and child-hungry Sanderson Sisters wreaking havoc on the world with comical and outrageous consequences. Fun and eccentric, this film is the perfect watch to get you in the witchy mood.

  

 

2. Halloween Franchise (1978 - 2022)

It isn’t really Halloween if you don’t watch at least one of the Halloween films with Michael Myers terrorising a bunch of innocent villagers with little to no explanation. On theme with the camping vibe, 2017 British Wilderness Horror The Ritual will have you hooked. A spine-chilling watch, this film follows four friends on a hiking trip in Sweden and it’s not long before their picturesque trip becomes the hike from hell.

  

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton films and Halloween are synonymous with one another. Burton’s famously gothic and eccentric film style (known as Burtonesque) bodes deliciously with telling the story of Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, in The Nightmare Before Christmas. After accidentally encountering Christmas town, Jack is intrigued by its jolly traditions. So much so, he attempts to bring it back to the gloomy Halloween town which causes confusion and resistance. This is an enchanting Halloween film and a must for the watch-list.

  

5. Frankenweenie (2012)

Tim Burton films and Halloween are synonymous with one another, which is why we must include another Burton film on the list, Frankenweenie. Inspired by the classic Mary Shelley novel “Frankenstein”, Frankenweenie is a tale of a boy’s beloved dog, who sadly passes away suddenly, and he attempts to bring his dog back through a powerful science experiment. To add that extra spooky feel to the film, this cartoon is exclusively black and white.

   

6. The Addams Family (1991)

Hilarious and dark, The Addams Family tells the story of an unconventional and wealthy family, who are blissfully unaware of how strange and frightening people find them. The Addams are famous for their distinct aesthetic, which includes wearing strictly black clothes, having cruel personalities, and living in a Dracula-style mansion, making for the perfect Halloween watch.

  

7. Sightseers (2012)

British black comedy Sightseers follows a couples cross-country road trip which takes a dark turn. Outrageous and outlandish, this film will simultaneously horrify you and make you laugh out loud.

  

8. Eden Lake (2008)

Camping and horror mixed into one, Eden Lake is a British survival thriller film about modern youth gone wild. A young couple goes on a romantic weekend away camping by a lake and it’s not long before their weekend is turned ugly by an aggressive group of local kids.

  

9. The Witches (1990)

Dark fantasy children’s film The Witches is guaranteed to give you a fright. A young boy goes on holiday with his witch-hunter grandmother, encountering a group of evil witches plotting to turn all the world’s children into mice.

The Blair Witch Project is a truly spine-chilling horror and will have you sleeping with one eye open. A fictional story following three student film makers who hike into the Maryland backwoods to cover the mystery behind the elusive Blair Witch incidents. After misplacing their map, things take an unexpected turn. A popular horror amongst film critics, this film will give you plenty to think about.
