Behind the scenes at the Tow Car Awards

Every year, a team from the Club, What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines, and a host of volunteers help to put a number of new tow cars through their paces in our Tow Car Awards testing.

With the coveted title of Tow Car Awards champion up for grabs, as well as several weight category and discretionary awards to be won, the rigorous testing seeks to sort the wheat from the chaff and find a car that bosses towing on all fronts.

In this, the Tow Car Awards’ tenth year, we put 41 tow cars to the test, in five weight categories from the lighter tow cars to the real heavyweights.

Included in the testing were previous winners such as the Land Rover Discovery, Skoda Octavia and Jagua

r XF, as well as some new vehicles, such as the Jeep Renegade, Ssangyong Tivoli and Fiat 500X.

Each car is put through a series of tests, including emergency lane changes, sudden braking, cornering, hill starts and more. Each car is also loaded with as much camping kit as it can manage, and scored on its practicality as a result.
We make awards for the best petrol tow car, the best green tow car, the best ultralight tow car, the best MPV and in this, the tenth year of the Tow Car Awards, we made a special award for the best tow car across the history of the event.
As to the winner of that, well you’ll have to wait until the middle of June to find out what it is, along with all the other winners this year. The full results are published in our July magazine, so keep your eye out!
