A wonderfully secluded campsite hidden in the Welsh hills.

Rhandirmwyn (pronounced ran-dee-mo-n) Club campsite lies just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park. The name means ‘Valley of the minerals’ and is a lead mining area in the Towy Valley.

The campsite is situated in the middle of the valley and the lively River Towy run alongside it. The campsite is spacious and well set out with excellent facilities. Surrounded by hills and trees it’s ideal for families or individuals interested in walking, cycling or just relaxing.

There are many beautiful hill and river walks within easy reach of this campsite. The Cambrian Way passes through the edge of the site. The circular all-ability access trail in Cwmrhaeadr Forest, one-and-a-half miles from the campsite is perfect for cyclists. There are two nice pubs in the village, your reward for completing the steep climb up to them!

Head south from the campsite to the Usk reservoir in the National Park. An eight-mile trail wends its way around the shore. Fishing is available here too. The nearby Glasfyndd Forest also has great walking and cycling tracks.

Llyn Brianne reservoir is also worth a visit. The road around the reservoir has some breathtaking views. Also visit the subterreanean world of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales. As well as the caves you can visit the dinosaur park, shire horse centre and the Iron Age village. The 13th century hillside Carreg Cenne Castle is south of the campsite near the village of Trapp.

Don’t miss a visit to the RSPB Dinas Nature Reserve where you can spot red kites. You can see more red kites as well as ravens and buzzards at Gigrin Farm Bird reserve in the market town of Rhayader.

It would be a nice place if it were not for some of the issues we encountered.

It would be a nice place if it were not for some of the issues we encountered. Approaching through the "lanes" from the NW there is no signage and sat nav runs out 1/2 mile before. There is no mobile so you can't phone to find out. Anyone with a big rig is going to struggle backing up and there is no possibility of turning round. We arrived as the heat wave was breaking and the air at the site was full of midgies, mozzies and biting flies. So bad was it that you were breathing them in! We had to shut ourselves in and clear the van of them. In the end my wife was badly bitten and took several days to get over it. Even the dog was struggling with them. It was too late to try and find anywhere else but we left at dawn and bought breakfast in Landovery.

Nothing was too much trouble for the very friendly site staff who work tirelessly to keep the whole site immaculate. The toilet block is in need of refurbishment but the beams which can often be full of cobwebs were immaculate as was the rest of the amenities. All showers were working well with plenty of hot water. The abundance of flowers and shrubs, all immaculately pruned and weeded, added to the wonderful views from this site. The walks information was excellent with copies available for a donation to the flower fund. This is a wonderful site for both relaxation and activities such as walking and cycling as long as you don't mind hills. Will definitely come again.

Excellent site, facilities, even drive over motorhome waste station, wardens as good as you will find, nothing is too much trouble, wi fi works well, good walk from site down the river, roads are narrow on approach but take it steady and you'll be ok, Lynn Brianne reservoir is a must to visit and then drive past into the hills and the scenery is beautiful. You are in the middle of nowhere so go well stocked, however the on site shop has all sorts of basics. The only downside is the weather, go prepared and you will have a great stay.

“Yet another fabulous weeks holiday at this superb site. Friendly welcome from the wardens who maintain the site to a remarkable standard. The scenery is absolutely stunning and there are some fabulous walks along the river Towy in both directions as well as some more strenuous ones. Can highly recommend this site for anybody who appreciates nature and beautiful scenery. We will definitely be returning.”
