Ideal site for exploring Teesdale & the Yorkshire Dales and outdoor pusuits.

If you’re looking for peace and tranquillity, a rural location with plenty of walking and cycling opportunities our Barnard Castle Club campsite is for you.

Located on the north eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, handy for the attractions of Teesdale and within walking distance of Barnard Castle or Barney as it is known locally, the tree-lined campsite is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

This pretty tree-lined campsite has 90 pitches. The camping field is level and has a well placed modern facilities block offering showers/toilets, a laundry, disabled facilities, a parent and child room and a dish washing area.

There are plenty of walks direct from the site and an excellent dog walk for those who don’t want to venture too far. Children are catered for with a play area and the visiting fish and chip van comes highly recommended.

There’s fishing at Balderhead and Hury reservoirs to the west of the site.

For days out visit the Bowes Museum, Bolton Castle, the Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre, the Dales Countryside Museum and England’s highest unbroken waterfall, High Force.

We were welcomed by the site staff and after booking in, shown a couple of pitches we could choose from. The pitch was a very good size and accommodated our trailer tent well. We were told where the water points, bins, and amenities block was and if we needed any help just to give the site staff a call. The shower and toilets were very clean, the water is always hot. The site itself is near a farm. You can hear the farm animals and there was one very raucous sheep who liked to be heard, but that didn't bother us. A fish and chip van visited the site on the Saturday and a pizza van visited on te Friday, we didn't try these as we like our BBQ's but we were told by our neighbours that both the pizza and the fish and chips were delicious. It's a short drive into Barnard Castle where you would be able to get groceries and other bits and bobs. Darlington is only half an hour away if you needed anything Barnard Castle couldn't provide. The site has a small playground for children and is quite safe for them to run or ride around on bikes. If I was to pick a negative, it wouldn't really be about the site itself, but there were a few little ones who did spoil the peaceful atmosphere - screaming, shouting and running around our pitch. They seemed to favour our end of the campsite away from where they were camped, so for us, our peaceful weekend away was not so peaceful. Although it may sound harsh, I think this site would benefit by being an adults only site not purely because of the noise but also, I think if we would have had our children with us (teenagers) they would have been a bit fed up after a day or so. This by no means is a criticism on the campsite - I will definitely be recommending it to my friends and will no doubt visit again in the future.

Following the directions in the big book,it does,nt mention that the first caravan site is actually organised by the caravan club, not the CCC .The only thing I can think of ,is the distance you have to go to empty the chemical waste,if you are some distance from the block.

This area is of historical interest lots of castles to visit, the countryside is magnificent, lovely walks for the energetic and dogs, very friendly and hospitable people. Bowes Museum is 5 minutes ride away and worth a visit, also High Force one of the highest water falls in England is fantastic. Lots of interesting villages and parks the whole area is well worth visiting. The caravan site had a play area for children but there weren't any on site when we visited so cannot comment on it.
