This is a lovely, clean, well run site.

This is a lovely, clean, well run site. I was a little concerned about there only being 3 showers, however I did not queue once for a shower, morning or evening. The site is sloping and we did pitch on a slight incline. Umberleigh is further away from the coast than I realised, therefore you really had to drive everywhere. Umberleigh has a small railway station with trains hourly to Exeter and Barnstaple (which seems to be the central hub) with most locations navigated through Barnstaple or so it felt! Barnstaple is 20mins by car or approx. 10 by train. Westward Ho is approx. 30mins away and I think is the closest beach. Whilst staying here we also experienced the muck spreading in the next door fields and some stubble burning. And while there is nothing the club can do it should be mentioned in the brochure etc that the site is very "rural". We brought bikes and had hoped to cycle but there appeared to be a distinct lack of cycle ways, bridleways or general footpaths, although the Tarka Trail runs through Barnstaple, it was not somewhere we felt safe riding to so took the train, rode a little and used the train back to site. This was disappointing as previously we have ridden almost everyday. Although the site is lovely, clean, well run, friendly and all the things you would expect from the club, we probably wouldn't return as we found it just too far from anything and no real opportunity to leave the car behind.

This is a quiet and practical site that has been enhanced by thoughtful planning and planting. There is plenty of space for children to play away from most units in complete safety. Dogs also have the advantage of a long and interesting walk - it is farm land so leads are essential. Our hosts were friendly and helpful ensuring that we felt that no request was unimportant. There was even the helping hand as we were packing up to leave on a very windy Sunday. This site is a good base if you are touring North Devon being 10 minutes from Barnstaple and main routes to all attractions. August sees the annual classic scramble at Berrynarbor near Combe Martin if you are interested in classic motorcycles. Mortehoe has beautiful coastal walk that the dogs love. Unfortunately when we walked to Rockham bay the steps down had disappeared in a landslip. Ilfracombe now has an interesting statue at the mouth of the harbour. This is certainly an area we shall be returning to and we shall be staying at Umberleigh.

Just spent our annual 10 day summer holiday at the Umberleigh site.

This review is for Umberleigh

Just spent our annual 10 day summer holiday at the Umberleigh site. As is expected from the Camping and Caravanning Club, all the facilities were in excellent order. The wardens were particularly hospitable and helpful, even to the point of going round to every unit/tent on the site to advise on what should be done when the weather turned very windy and wet, and indeed it did turn very wet and windy. The site drained very well and dried up quite quickly. The Games room was great for out little one who enjoyed many a game of skittles. We were pitched fairly close to the play area, so on some nights it was quite noisy up to around 10pm, after that the site was completely quiet. A word of warning though, quite a few pitches are on sloping ground (not mentioned in the club handbook) and we were infact pitched on quite a slope and therefore spent quite a few nights rolling into each other in our tent. A few of the caravans were chocked as high up as was possible and looked very precarious. Over the 10 days we stayed there the local farmers decided it was time to do Muck Spreading however they did not rake it in to the ground, the smell was horrendous. Nothing that site could do about it but be warned. The location of the site is not too bad, about 30 mins away from the major attractions (Milky Way, Watermouth Castle etc), but that itself is a good thing because it keeps the site from being too busy. A fish and chip van visited on Tuesday evening and this was very good, however get there was quite a queue. In general a small, well kept site with very good facilities we will be returning.
