Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

This was our longest stay on one site in 3 years of caravanning so there was a certain amount of trepidation when we first arrived as to whether this was a good idea or not. Our fears proved to be unfounded. Although the grass pitch was not our first choice ( I knew this when I booked, by the way) it turned out to be perfect with the weather we experienced - sunny and dry in the main. The pitch had loads of room for our large awning and Freelander. It was lovely to sit out in the sun listening to the birds sing and getting an early season tan! The toilet and shower block, although located a distance from our pitch, is very modern and always clean and tidy - a pleasure to use at any time of the day. The wardens are always pleasant and never failed to greet you while walking around the site. We used the little information booth at Reception as a starting point for our holiday visits. If you stay as long as we did you'll become very aware that this is mainly a "one nighter" for those heading off to other sites or on their way home. Although, obviously, this isn't a problem if you are this type of visitor it does generate a lot of early morning movement and noise, especially if you are located next to the waste disposal point as we were. The site is a short step from Moffat, a lovely little town with quaint shops, local pubs and good restaurants. We found Brodies Restaurant to be exceptional and the Moffat Toffee shop (with 100 bottles of different whisky!) a great place for pressies to take home. The surrounding area has plenty of other attractions like fell walking, museums and little towns to visit. We didn't have a single day when we wondered what to do next. If you like hiking then you might like to try the walk to Loch Skeen. It can be challenging for the less fit but worth the effort when you get there. My overall impression is of a busy, well managed and happy site which benefits from its proximity to the A74 and the town of Moffat.

We recently stayed on this site for over three weeks, as our adjacent apartment was having work done. So we know the town and the site location very well. But how lovely to see it from the resident's perspective. Great facilities, always kept very clean. New warden team were really welcoming and helpful. Although only minutes from the local shops, tea-rooms and restaurants, the site itself sits in a large open area, with great views or the hills which border the town. Many of the neighbours we spoke to during our stay were repeat visitors, and the first-timers also seemed to be impressed. Active campers were away walking and cycling in the surrounding areas during the day and left the stay-closer-to-homers with a stroll up the high street or through the park, which has lots to offer the little ones. From barbecuers to bikers, it seemed like everyone we spoke to was having a good time. Well done CCC.
