A spacious campsite from which to enjoy the forest

An award-winning, spacious heathland campsite, Roundhill has plenty of room to let you enjoy the freedom of the forest. Wildlife; including donkeys, cattle, horses and ponies, graze freely around the campsite. Adult and junior fishing permits are available for Hatchet Pond situated close to the campsite and are available from mid-June. In addition there is always access to the forest’s numerous cycle and footpaths. There is even a separate field which can accommodate large groups of up to 60 campers, ideal for rally bookings. Nearby attractions include the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and the remains of the Cistercian Abbey founded in 1204 by King John.

Like some other reviewers, we have been visiting Roundhill for many years but this was our first visit during a peak holiday weekend. It was great to see so many families enjoying the freedom that their children can enjoy, riding their bikes all around the site. It is very different to other CCC sites I have visited. No immaculate toilet blocks (although the staff do their very best to cope with the overloaded facilities). Hardly any big motorhomes whose occupants shut themselves away in the evening watching TV. In their place were lots of tents with families cooking on bbqs outdoors and taking evening strolls around the site. We took our cycles and followed some of the many off-road paths that can be accessed from the campsite. But please, please, Forestry Commission - build more toilet/shower blocks to cope with the increasing number of campers, most of whom do not have their own facilities. And a big thankyou to the site staff who were relentlessly cheerful and helpful.

Camped at Roundhill many times and will probably return. But... there needs to be investment in the infrastructure: the gravel roads and some grassed areas are noticeably bumpier than previously; also the toilet/blocks were not all fully functional - in need of more maintenance (no criticism of the site staff, who were very good - this is directed at the C&C Club senior management, who for just a little more spending on maintenance could make the site much better). Before we book again, I'll ask whether these points have been addressed.

Rural location outside Brockenhurst, but still very accessible to other parts of the New Forest and the South Coast. Interesting walks and locations within 30 minutes by foot or 15 minutes by bike including museums, churches, ancient monuments, etc. Great for biking and you can hire bikes in the local village of Brockenhurst.

Our family (2 adults and 4 children) have stayed at Roundhill over the last 9 years but that was our last I'm sorry to say. Beautiful scenery and setting but the people that stay there tend to be very loud and disrespectful to others. Many children are clearly left to the their own devices and happily upset other campers. Even our children were amazed at the actions of other children on the site and said they didn't want to stay here anymore. If you are happy to endure loud music (oh and the rangers don't seem to mind this), children running through your small area causing chaos (during the night as well - how wonderful...)then this is your campsite. Not for us anymore - it used to be a lovely place to come to but us as a family have noticed the downhill turn over the last three years. What a shame. Ashurst is definitely the better option as they seem to care there and soon put a stop to any annoyance going on. Far cleaner too.
