Overview

Camp at our secluded site in Kent, the Garden of England.

Our Oldbury Hill Club campsite is located in an idyllic spot within Styants Wood, opposite the Iron Age fort of the same name in Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a lovely open, all grass campsite. Pitches are sloping so chocks will be required.

The area is ideal for walkers. Two way-marked circular walks pass over Oldbury Camp, the large Iron Age Hill fort. The hill is now covered with woodland managed by the National Trust. You can also walk from the campsite to Ightham Mote, a medieval moated manor house with a 14-acre garden and restaurant.

It’s a short car journey to Knole, a National Trust run English country house set in a deer park; Penshurst Palace and Gardens; the National Trust run Chartwell, family home of Winston Churchill; the beautiful Emmetts Garden and Hever Castle and Gardens.

You can also visit London by train from Borough Green and Sevenoaks stations.

The site was rather muddy while we were there but management was most helpful to get us hooked up for departure. Our dog loved the wooded walks just across the road and there were very many NT and English Heritage places of interest nearby. All in all, a most refreshing break.

The site was very peaceful and the wardens were very friendly but it was not suitable for disabled due to the position of the elsan point . On our visit the site was very wet and we could not park on the grass, the warden placed us on the roadway. It is not really suitable for motor vans in the winter

Di and Tracey work hard to keep the site in good condition and do a superb job in keeping the grass well groomed and the toilets blocks as clean as possible. However, the latter do need some attention ,such as a decent roof as the current one leaves the block partly open to the elements and is therefore rather damp and cold. There is only one shower in the main male toilet block which I can see causing a problem if the site is full. if you are parked at the top of the slope, you have to drag water uphill from the only nearby water point. OK if you are fit! Whilst there is a small childrens playground, the site does not permit ball games etc. perhaps an area could be set aside for this purpose. The site is big enough. Whilst I was there it was very wet and the site was closed for new admittances on two occasions for a short while. I had some difficulty hitching up when I left because of the need to reverse uphill on very wet ground. Overall I would recommend the site but it would be better in the warm summer.
