Overview

Camping near York doesn't get much better than Sheriff Hutton.

The historic city of York is just a few miles from our pretty Sheriff Hutton Club campsite and the North York Moors and the coastal towns of Bridlington and Filey are within easy reach.

Our immaculate, well-manicured tree-lined campsite offers a tranquil base from which to explore the local area. It has 90 grass and hardstand pitches and modern facilities including a parent and child wet room with a baby change station, sink, top and tail bowl, toilet and shower. There are also laundry facilities, a small play area in the centre of the site with swings, a slide and climbing section and a small site shop.

The local village of Sheriff Hutton has a post office, two charming pubs, castle ruins and a point to point race course.

With Roman, Viking and medieval heritage, York has much to see and do. York Minster, the Yorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum head up the list. You can also take a boat trip on the River Ouse and join a walking tour.

Great family days out include Creepy Crawlies - an indoor/outdoor adventure play centre with café – on the outskirts of York. Flamingo Land at Malton combines animals and theme rides and Monk Farm near Thirsk is full of cuddly animals.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington is based on a World War Two Bomber Command Station and Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum is housed within an original Prisoner of War Camp.

I was visiting The Great Gathering and thought this would be quieter than sites nearer York.

This review is for Sheriff Hutton

I was visiting The Great Gathering and thought this would be quieter than sites nearer York. However, there is still quite a bit of road noise, especially during the week. The wifi was also a bit iffy, but that could have been the weather. On the plus side, great staff, great facility block. Although the road is not ideal for walking, there is not far to go to a lane to the bus stop, about 15 minutes walk. From here you can get to York, Castle Howard and Malton. Catch the early bus to Malton and you can reach the coast via bus or train. It is ideal if you don't want to drive, though the buses are infrequent. Castle Howard has an arboretum worth a visit, as well as he House. Rievaulx Terraces are a good walk and there is also the Abbey.

This has been our 5th stay this tear and we love the place. The layout, space and most of everything the cleanliness and orderliness of the site is second to none - i am unsure what could be done to improve it. The wardens are the best in the UK I feel sure - Sharon and team you ARE THE BEST. i love the herb trough to help yourself to when cooking- just everything is how we love it. Restful breaks for a work and unbelievably beautiful countryside. THANK YOU ALL AT CARAVAN AND CAMPING CLUB. We will be back for a few visits for sure 2014

Fantastic welcome from very friendly wardens - we were impressed that they took the time to come out of the office, point out the facilities and let us through the barrier. Facilities were good and immaculately clean. Down sides to this site are the noise from the road ( - rush hour starts very early! ) and the narrowness of the road on site which made manoeuvring the caravan in and out a bit tricky.
