Overview

Camping near York doesn't get much better than Sheriff Hutton.

The historic city of York is just a few miles from our pretty Sheriff Hutton Club campsite and the North York Moors and the coastal towns of Bridlington and Filey are within easy reach.

Our immaculate, well-manicured tree-lined campsite offers a tranquil base from which to explore the local area. It has 90 grass and hardstand pitches and modern facilities including a parent and child wet room with a baby change station, sink, top and tail bowl, toilet and shower. There are also laundry facilities, a small play area in the centre of the site with swings, a slide and climbing section and a small site shop.

The local village of Sheriff Hutton has a post office, two charming pubs, castle ruins and a point to point race course.

With Roman, Viking and medieval heritage, York has much to see and do. York Minster, the Yorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum head up the list. You can also take a boat trip on the River Ouse and join a walking tour.

Great family days out include Creepy Crawlies - an indoor/outdoor adventure play centre with café – on the outskirts of York. Flamingo Land at Malton combines animals and theme rides and Monk Farm near Thirsk is full of cuddly animals.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington is based on a World War Two Bomber Command Station and Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum is housed within an original Prisoner of War Camp.

Ready Camp is available at this campsite. (Please note that, although we welcome dogs on this site, in the interest of all guests we do not permit pets to stay within the Ready Camp tents).

We came here on our way to Scotland on our motorbike.

We came here on our way to Scotland on our motorbike. A helpful, friendly greeting and we were shown to an immaculate and level grassy pitch close to the facilities block. Sheriff Hutton is about a mile down the road and can be walked with care as the verges had been carefully cut when we arrived. Decent pub and the village and there is a bus to York, even on a Sunday. Would definitely go back.

This was our first visit to the Sheriff Hutton site, and it certainly won't be our last.

This was our first visit to the Sheriff Hutton site, and it certainly won't be our last. In a quiet countryside location, but within easy distance of York, for which we used the Monks Cross Park & Ride. The trip on the bus in to the City only took 15 minutes, so don't bother with your car. Lots to see in York, but even if trains are not your thing, you must visit the National Railway Museum. Its free, and a great day out for kids and adults. York is full of history with its lovely Minster, the Shambles and walks along its ancient walls. Take an open top bus tour, or maybe a trip along the river, there is so much to see and do in this beautiful City. We had a trip to both Filey and Bridlington, which has a lovely sea front and gardens. One evening we went to see our favourite group, The ELO Experience at the Art Deco Bridlington Spa theatre, a lovely place with a cafe overlooking the sea, and to come out of the theatre straight on to the promenade after the concert was a magical experience. To the North are the North Yorkshire Moors, an area of outstanding scenery, and I haven't even mentioned nearby Pickering, Harrogate, Knaresborough and the beautiful RHS gardens at Harlow Carr. So if you want to explore this part of Yorkshire, as we did, then Sheriff Hutton is the ideal site. Its immaculate with friendly staff, a nice kids play area and easy access off a main road if you are towing. No narrow lanes and flat pitches. Super site, we will be back!

This site is conveniently placed for most activities and visiting sights and shopping around the local area of York If there is one criticism regarding the site it is the uncontrollable very high temperature of the showers rendering them almost dangerous to children and the elderly whose tolerance is not so great it would benefit all if this could be reduced to a more acceptable level and benefit the cost of the energy to the club
