Overview

Camping near York doesn't get much better than Sheriff Hutton.

The historic city of York is just a few miles from our pretty Sheriff Hutton Club campsite and the North York Moors and the coastal towns of Bridlington and Filey are within easy reach.

Our immaculate, well-manicured tree-lined campsite offers a tranquil base from which to explore the local area. It has 90 grass and hardstand pitches and modern facilities including a parent and child wet room with a baby change station, sink, top and tail bowl, toilet and shower. There are also laundry facilities, a small play area in the centre of the site with swings, a slide and climbing section and a small site shop.

The local village of Sheriff Hutton has a post office, two charming pubs, castle ruins and a point to point race course.

With Roman, Viking and medieval heritage, York has much to see and do. York Minster, the Yorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum head up the list. You can also take a boat trip on the River Ouse and join a walking tour.

Great family days out include Creepy Crawlies - an indoor/outdoor adventure play centre with café – on the outskirts of York. Flamingo Land at Malton combines animals and theme rides and Monk Farm near Thirsk is full of cuddly animals.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington is based on a World War Two Bomber Command Station and Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum is housed within an original Prisoner of War Camp.

We stayed at this site twice in August, for one night, then for two nights, either side of a ferry crossing from Hull (relatively convenient). We have not visited a club site this year yet, as we find them too wrapped up in red tape. On both stays at Sheriff Hutton the welcome was warm, the facilities spotless and always available, and we had a choice of pitches, despite it being weekend. Indeed there were a lot of empty pitches of all types on both occasions. And that is the thing that irks slightly; on the second stay, I wanted a GWE pitch, but was told there were none, so I was offered a hard standing which I did not want. I was then offered a grass only pitch (a refund was given which I am grateful for) but over the two days of our stay, lots of GWE pitches remained empty. And there was a hardstanding pitch next to us with a vacant hookup point going spare all weekend (just yards from our pitch), but club rules don't allow us to use it on a 'grass only' pitch 'in case somebody arrives and wants the pitch'. We can unhook! The problem stems from not being allowed (club rules) to pitch our awning on grass whilst parking our old classic campervan on a hard standing. We take up far less room than an SUV pulling an 8m caravan plus awning, but our little van and awning must abide by the same rules...don't pitch on the grass and park on the hard standing. The hard standing on offer was rubble, we could not possibly pitch on that. It really got to us this weekend. A German family on an adjacent pitch, with a small tent, had similar issues; they had a huge adjacent hardstanding vacant all weekend and so a hookup was going spare, yet could not use it. Bonkers rules. I feel for the staff having to explain to every visitor this barmy bureaucracy. Despite the staff being so friendly on this site, we'll probably not renew our membership. It's a lovely site and if you have an UV and a whopper of a caravan and awning, you'll love it here.

On arrival we were offered a choice of pitches. The toilets and showers were always clean. Good site to visit York and the surrounding area. The only downside of the site is that it is a few miles from the nearest villages on a quite busy road. So gently strolling to the pub is not really an option.

Was offered a choice of pitches on arrival all of which were fine but as we have two children (6 and 8) chose one next to the play area and not too far from toilet block. This site is immaculate, with a circular road (smooth and ideal for scooters!) that allows you to watch the children wherever you are pitched - ideal for parents looking out for younger children. A small play park with only two swings and a slide/climbing frame but enough to keep our two happy for the 5 days we stayed. The toilet blocks were pristine at all times. Only slight problem was having to wait for a shower in the morning during busier periods. Perhaps another shower may be useful? Would definitely recommend this little gem of a site to others. We experienced torrential rain/thunderstorms on Thursday night which meant there was around 2 inches of water under our tent - as we walked on the ground sheet it felt like a waterbed. However all the rain water had gone by morning suggesting this is a very well drained field. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay!
