Overview

Between the North York Moors National Park and the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this peaceful campsite welcomes you to Yorkshire.

Our pretty Slingsby Club campsite sits between the rolling Howardian Hills to the south and the Vale of Pickering and the North York Moors National Park to the north making the campsite a popular base for walkers.

Situated in a peaceful location on the edge of a village, the level, well maintained campsite has modern facilities including a laundry, dish washing area and a well equipped amenity block.

There are plenty of walking opportunities direct from the campsite. Slingsby village, for example, is within walking distance and surrounded by an intricate network of lanes, footpaths and bridleways.

The area is dotted with magnificent historic buildings. Take your pick from gems including the magnificent 18th century Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Newburgh Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey.

Three of the area’s most popular attractions are within 15 miles of the campsite. There’s Flamingoland with its wild animals and wilder rides, the modern history theme museum – Eden Camp and the North York Moors Railway which runs a scenic route from Pickering to Whitby.

The medieval city of York, around a half hour’s drive away, is famous for its city walls, minster and a variety of museums. The city’s Park and Ride scheme accommodates motorhomes.

There are only Club Service pitches so the fee of £3.85 will apply at all times.

On booking this site we were told that no hard standings were available, which as it turned out was not the case and proved to be a major issue. On arrival I found that I had left my water adapter at the last site and whilst I openly admit this was my fault the site was not helpful and was just given a shrug so I had to drive to the local town. We were shown a pitch that was at the far end of the site on grass that had seen a great deal of rain and therefore was quite soft. As this was at the end of the site there was no lighting bar for a dim light 20 yards away on the water point. We hardly saw the wardens over the 3 days that we were on site. On the morning of our departure I found that the ground was so soft that my wheels could not get purchase and I was stuck. The wardens were not on site and I had no option but to use the mats from the outside of the toilets to use as wheel grips and with other campers we managed to get onto the site road. This was all very distressing as there had been at least three hard standings unused over the time of our stay which we could of used, and we have made a note not to return and to make sure that we pass on our experience to other campers. We are currently on a long tour and have used a number of C&CC sites the length of the country and this was the worst by far.

The road in (from the North) is a bit twisty and would be challenging for an inexperienced caravan tower (like me!) if it was dark. The village is charming and has a wonderful pub - The Grapes - for meals. Nice walks and scenery. The wardens were helpful but not intrusive. The only issue we found was that all the loos were closed for cleaning at the same time (11 - 12) and people were inconvenienced (as they would be I suppose). Only a minor complaint though for an otherwise good stay.

Just had a 5 night staff on this lovely site, found the staff to be friendly and helpful. the showers were spotless and very clean as was the washing up area. The site is very handy for visiting the towns of Whitby Scarborough York { which has a nice park and ride system ) and castle howard is a lovely place to spend a couple of hours and it has a very nice butchers in the grounds which sold lovely meat.In the village of slingsby there is a nice pub called the grapevines which do serve meals BUT you do need to book. Will be going back to this site again in the future just for views.
