A lovely campsite located on a canal with a number of attractions nearby.

Our Devizes Club campsite is a lovely quiet and secluded retreat by the side of the Avon and Kennet Canal in the heart of Wiltshire. The surrounding countryside, ideal for walkers and cyclists, is where you’ll find some of the UK’s most significant prehistoric sites including the iconic Stonehenge and Avebury Stone circle.

This well-kept, tree-lined campsite provides 90 pitches, some lined by hedging to give a more private feel. In addition to the amenity blocks, campers can expect a children’s play area and playing field and a large dog field.

You can walk or cycle into Devizes from the campsite via the spectacular Caen Hill flight of 29 locks or catch a bus from the stop a five minute walk from site. Buses also operate to Melksham, Bath and Bristol from here.

This bustling historic town has weekly general and collectors' markets and a regular farmers' market. Wadworth's Brewery is here. See its famous shire horses make deliveries in town. Sample the ales at the visitor centre where tours of the brewery and stables can be booked. Also in the town is the Wiltshire Heritage Museum where you'll find Britain’s best Bronze Age archaeology collections. The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust Museum alongside the canal is where you’ll discover the fascinating story of this delightful waterway.

Further afield Longleat and its 900 acres of parkland is a great family day out.

Worth Noting

Fishing available on the canal. Fees payable at reception. Rock pegs needed for hardstandings.

If you want your dog to be on a lead 24/7 whilst staying on a site then this is then one for you. At some time in the past somebody has put a lot of money and effort into making the dog field escape proof so that dogs can run free. Now however there are signs everywhere that dogs must be always on a leash. I agree with this around the pitches and immediate site area. Some dogs, mine included, will not perform their normal bodily functions whilst on a lead, thus at other sites dogs are allowed off in a secure environment known as a dog walk or exercise area, but not here. Previously (see the Berrys review of Apr.2014) this was true at this site. After a day or two of restraint myself and others in my group did let our dogs run in the dog field with the gate secured, they enjoyed it and so did we. Obviously this was not approved of by the Wardens so to make the point they removed the gate completely and replaced it with a plastic trestle that did not fill the gap, and another "keep dogs on the lead " sign. This was to my mind just being vindictive. It is true that you can walk the dog(s) on the tow path but at weekends you have to run the gauntlet of the cyclists and so that means the dog lead goes on again. Regarding other points with 90 pitches full the number of toilets and showers seem to be insufficient and queues do occur. Some of the staff do try to be helpful but I think occasionally are out of their depth if local information is needed we were informed that the local caravan showroom and spares, at Trowbridge, were open 7 days a week when unfortunately they are closed all day Sunday, guess what day we went ! When there are so many really good sites nearby we will not be returning to this one, with or without a dog.

Our pitch was exactly what we wanted and not over looked.

Our pitch was exactly what we wanted and not over looked. Local pubs were within an easy walk along the towpath. For those a little more adventurous Devizes is a good walk where you can get reasonable food to sustain you for your return journey. The grass pitches were slow to recover and were a little brown throughout our stay. There were two things I have not experienced on other club sites, 1, there were no waste bins around the site only the main collection area at the exit to the site. 2, security locks on the toilet blocks seems a bit over kill for a private site. Overall we enjoyed our stay on this site and would recommend it to others.

We were really looking forward to this trip as was told about how nice site was. Lovely welcome, Tom drove his bike around with us following until we saw a pitch we liked. Showers are fantastic in that water pressure & temp are top rate! Little shop in the reception where you can get basics but limited opening times and quite expensive - as no local shop within walking distance it was a little disappointing Site adjacent to canal and we walked to devizes one day (4 miles each way) via it and semington next day (just under 4 miles) lovely pub there - Somerset arms! Great food Melksham was not a nice walk we were told due to having to go through either housing estate or industrial estate to get there Lovely flat pitches. Nice area to walk dog. Staff super friendly Highly recommend and will be back!
