Best family tents

Winning Brand: Hi Gear

Best Family Tent 2017Highly Commended: Outwell
Highly Commended: Quechua

Our definition: Three or more people camping together? For a week or more? That’s the simple sum-up of our Family Tents category, where size really can matter. Such tents may take longer to put up and pack away, but it’s the space and convenience when pitched that are paramount in allowing the whole family to enjoy their camping holiday.

Best family tents TABLEA fiercely fought category, this, with the Go Outdoors brand, Hi Gear, just pipping top spot ahead of independent Outwell and Quechua (sold exclusively by Decathlon) – the former top-scored with a 91.1% satisfaction rating, followed by 89.9% and 89.4% respectively.

Outwell’s Premium Collection, which includes the Montana 5 and 6 models, was the most popular single range in terms of number of responses.

Three other brands stood out in this category – Khyam (with 86.9%), Vango (86.4%) and Kampa (86.1%).

We asked tent owners to tell us, on a scale of one to ten, how satisfied overall they are with how their tent has performed in a number of key areas, where one is “not at all satisfied” and 10 is “extremely satisfied”. We expressed the final rating (satisfaction score) as a percentage which you can see here in the table.

Notes:

This category effectively replaced two from the first Tent Survey – Five- to Six-person Tents and Seven-person and Over Tents.

Typical quotes:

“We had the Aura 3 then the Enigma 5, but both were not quite large enough for us to be comfortable for a long weekend or more. We also have a large dog so we needed the extra space that the Oasis 6 gives us, in abundance!” (Hi Gear)

“We choose the Zenobia Elite six-man tent as it had two separate rooms and plenty of living space. Having only five poles to put the tent up made it quick and manageable to do alone.” (Hi Gear)

“We went on our first camp as a family with friends, we loved it! Tried a secondhand tent then another from a different well-known brand. Neither seemed to be the one for us. We started to research what was coming out new that year, joined a few camping groups and we fell in love with the Outwell brand!” (Outwell)

“Size of tent for a young family with the option to continue using it as the children grow. The tent came with separate bedroom compartments which was a good option for the children.” (Quechua)
