Rear-mounted bike racks tested

There are many types of bike racks currently available for your car or motorhome, with a variety of advantages and disadvantages. You’ll need to lift your bikes up high to reach a roof-mounted rack, which may not be an option with a heavy electric bike. The strap type, which attach to the tailgate, can be a little fiddly and when you replace your car you’re likely to find your particular rack is not compatible with another vehicle.
As a result, this gear guide concentrates on compact towball mounted solutions. These generally have universal fittings so as long as you already have a towbar on your car or motorhome – and it can carry the load – the bike rack should last a long time.
