The smell of canvas can be extremely evocative, taking us back to the fun and freedom of childhood camping trips. On the other hand a smelly, mouldy tent can really take the edge off things. So here are some tips to ensure you’re ready to enjoy the fresh scents of your next camping holiday from the start. Most new tents have a distinctive smell straight out of the bag. This might be pleasant but it could be a little strong from a coating that’s been applied to the fabric. Fire retardants, ultra-violet light protectors and other coatings can contain solvents that linger, especially when a new tent is stored in a bag. We always recommend pitching your tent before your holiday to make sure everything’s present and correct. If you have space in the garden this should also give you the chance to leave the tent pitched for a while to let any smells dissipate before packing it away again. If you don’t have space at home, try contacting a local campsite to see if you could do the same there.
