There’s an air of other worldliness about the Devonshire coastal town of Lynmouth that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe it’s because of the geography. It certainly feels remote. To get there you have to drive across miles of unpopulated moorland high on Exmoor, or arrive on the coast road via vertiginous hairpin bends. The collection of houses, shops and pubs that sit on either side of the river mouth are tightly hugged by the cliffs of the deep river valley, seemingly hiding it from the outside world.
