If you’re interested in getting away from it all in some of the most beautiful and remote locations in the UK, then camping on Certificated Sites could be the perfect option for you.
There are over 1,200 Certificated Sites, or CSs throughout the UK that are authorised by The Camping and Caravanning Club to operate as small camp sites. Since they need only enough room to comfortably satisfy their upper limit of five caravans or motorhomes, they can be found in some of the most beautiful and unique locations around.
If you’re a tent camper, you’re also more than welcome to stay on a CS. You’ll find them on farms, on land attached to Public Houses, next to tourist attractions, and some even in remote, but large back gardens. You’ll find breathtaking views near the coast, near to fishing lakes and riding stables, and more unusually you’ll be able to camp on a vineyard – the CS network offers them all.
The minimum facilities offered on these sites are a water supply and somewhere for you to empty rubbish and chemical waste. However, you’ll find that many of them have a whole lot more, including toilet and shower facilities and mains electric hook-up, and shops with local produce. Plus, you’ll still be greeted by a face from The Friendly Club.
Eric Bolderson, Chairman of the Club’s Exempted Camping Committee, told us: “The best and most unusual Certificated Sites are often discovered and kept a secret by those wishing to keep the sites to themselves.
“It depends how basic you’d like to camp, but if you explore the 1,200-strong CS network you’re sure to find what you’re looking for, and once you do you’ll want to keep it a secret too.”

Notes to the editor:
1. Your Big Sites Book is given to all members of the Camping and Caravanning Club as part of their membership. It’s the largest and the most comprehensive UK camp site guide, detailing nearly 4,000 sites across the UK. All Certificated Sites are included in this guide.
2. 5-Van Site Certification – the law:
Under the Town and Country Planning General Development Order 1977, sites of no more than five caravans can be granted a certificate of exemption which exempts them from the provisions of the Public Health Act 1936 and the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960.
The Camping and Caravanning Club has been granted the power to issue land owners and occupiers a Certificate to operate a caravan site for recreational purposes, without the need for planning permission.
This allows no more than five caravans or motor caravans and as many tents as space permits at any one time, to be occupied by Club Members on an authorised area of land for up to 28 consecutive days. The site may have an all-year opening period. 22 September 2005
