Club Member Nominated to Lift Iconic Flame

Camping and Caravanning Club member Russell Winfield has been selected by The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) as a 2012 Torchbearer.

Russell, who also applied to be a Games volunteer, will carry the Flame through Boston, Lincolnshire on Wednesday, June 27.

The iconic Flame will set off from Land’s End on May 19 and will visit a number of the country’s most popular landmarks before arriving at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.

8,000 inspirational people will carry the Flame as it journeys across the UK. Nominated by someone they know, it will be the Torch Bearers’ moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community, in the UK and worldwide.

Russell was nominated by an unknown member of his table tennis club and was surprised when he received the news.

He said: “It’s just marvellous! It’s such an honour to be a part of the Games – even if it is only a tiny part. It really is going to be a moment to remember and it’s definitely something I look forward to telling my grandchildren about someday.”

Award-winning Club Sites that are in close proximity to the Torch Relay route include; Veryan (Lands End), Bellingham (near Hadrian’s Wall), Teversal (Matlock Bath and Nottingham) and Chichester (near Battle Abbey) whilst ten Camping in the Forest Sites idyllically located in the New Forest are also close to the action.

And the Club will also continue to provide affordable accommodation in the country’s capital this summer.

Sports fans have the opportunity to enjoy a number of Summer of 2012 Event Campsites, all of which are conveniently close to 2012 sporting venues.

There are also pitches available at our Club Sites and avid table tennis fan Russell will also be pitching up during the summer of 2012 at Theobalds Park.

He added: “I originally joined the Club because I was bought membership as a present! My family love going away in the caravan and this year we’re celebrating 25 years with the Club!”
