Festivals & Heritage

May Day in Minehead is when two Hobby Horses tour the town, the Sailors Horse and the Town Horse. Each horse is an 8ft long frame made from withy sticks lashed together with tarred cord into the shape of a boat with a dome-shaped head and a tin painted face. The whole frame, head and rope tail is covered with brightly coloured ribbons, and its sides are covered with different coloured rings.

Accompanied by melodeon and drums, and money-collectors, called Gulliver’s, the Hobby Horses tour the town. The Horses never appear on Sunday, it’s their day of rest, so if the festival period covers a Sunday, it is missed out and proceedings begin again on the Monday instead. If you want to see them just head down to the Quay and follow the music…
