Festivals & Heritage

A 64-acre ornamental garden with interest throughout the year from a large and varied plant collection and landscape features. A Scottish Baronial House, located only a mile from Castle Douglas, commands superb views over the magnificent gardens and surrounding estate, owned in the 14th century by the Black Douglas family and now a renowned wildlife habitat. William Gordon, a successful Liverpool businessman, bought the estate in 1867, and built the impressive sandstone house that dominates the garden. A 1,500-acre estate with waymarked trails, bird hides, and a wildfowl sanctuary. Estate and Garden: all year, daily. Visitor & Countryside Centres, Restaurant, Gift Shop, Plant Centre and Glasshouses: 1 Feb to 22 Mar, Fri-Sun 10-5; 23 Mar to 31 Oct, daily 10-5; 1 Nov to 23 Dec, Fri-Sun 10-5.
