National Trust for Scotland: Gladstone's Land
This event has finished
When: 23 Mar - 31 Oct 2013
Opening hours: 10am-5pm
Website: Visit website
The National Trust for Scotland's property on the Royal Mile is a typical 17th-century Old Town Edinburgh 'land' or tenement building (apartment block), which visitors can explore. Thomas Gledstanes, a merchant, bought the property on 20 December 1617. He and his family probably occupied an apartment on the third floor and rented out the rest of the building, including two luckenbooths (shops) at street level, to tenants from various backgrounds. On Saturdays during July and August, from 12.30-5pm, visitors can get a flavour of 17th-century life with the guides in costume in the display rooms. The costume guides really help to bring the house to life and ensure that visitors get the most from their visit. Open: 23 Mar to 30 Jun, daily 10-5; 1 Jul to 31 Aug, daily 10-6.30; 1 Sep to 31 Oct, daily 10-5.
