The Department of Health may make specific health recommendations for visitors to the areas covered in by Carefree. We advise checking with your doctor before departure or consulting the Department of Health’s booklet Health Advice for Travellers and/or its website. Check well in advance, just in case inoculations or other precautions are recommended. Bear in mind that medical costs may run into thousands if you fall ill or have an accident abroad. Travellers are strongly advised to take out private health insurance.
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
The EHIC entitles the holder to certain medical benefits in many European countries. It is not a substitute for your holiday insurance policy, since it will not cover you for major medical costs such as repatriation back to the UK.
You can submit an application for your spouse or partner and for children up to the age of 16 at the same time as your own application. With the date of birth and National Insurance numbers of all applicants to hand, you can apply as follows:
Call 0845 606 2030 for free delivery of your card or visit www.ehic.org.uk
Post Application forms are available from the Post Office. An optional checking service is offered for a small fee.
Take a photocopy of your EHIC, or a record of the number. Further information is in your travel pack.
