The cream of the camping crop is England's glorious South West. It's home to more beautiful beaches, festivals and attractions than you can shake a parasol at, not to mention cream teas and pasties. Many of its best attractions are free too, so your summer getaway needn't break the bank.

Check out the following fantastic family activities across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset that the kids (and big kids too) will love. Why not Splashdown in style at Devon's famous waterpark, or tackle Dorset's Adventure Wonderland? Gaze in awe at Canonteign's crashing falls, go bananas at Monkey World or rock out at the Tropical Pressure Festival. Bigbury on SeaBigbury on Sea Beach, California Cross

Devon is big on beaches, and the superb Bigbury on Sea Beach is no exception. Sitting pretty near Kingsbridge less than half an hour's drive from California Cross Campsite, this gorgeous slab of sand is a firm family favourite. The beach overlooks the famous Burgh Island which is accessible on foot at low tide, but it's much more fun to hitch a ride on the island's Sea Tractor.

SennSennen Cove Beach and Surf Hire, Sennen Cove

There's more than one reason to visit Land's End, and the gorgeous Sennen Cove Beach certainly tops the list. It's a surfing hotspot with many watersports, surf schools and qualified instructors on hand. The kids will have splashtastic fun in a safe environment - leaving you to relax on Sennen's famous golden sands. There are stacks of cafes, restaurants and shops along the seafront too, and our lovely Sennen Cove Campsite is just a couple of miles from the beach.

Lynmouth BeachLynmouth Beach and Surfing, Lynton

Framed by steep craggy cliffs and lush wooded hillsides, Lynmouth Beach is all about the views. This pretty Devonshire beach is a cracking spot for rockpooling and its expansive bay has an impressive surf scene, too. Why not kick back in a deckchair and watch the pros in action? It's an easy 10minute drive from Lynton Campsite, a glorious hilltop site in Exmoor National Park.

HeartlandsHeartlands, Veryan

Cornwall's award-winning visitor attraction is packed to the brim with eclectic fun, from exhibitions and clamber-on sculptures to adventure playgrounds, art and crafts, wide open spaces and all-weather indoor fun too. And it's free too! Once you've worn out the kids, Veryan Campsite on the gorgeous Roseland Peninsula is the perfect place to wind down.

Watergate BayWatergate Bay, Tregurrian

Tregurrian Campsite is perched right above Watergate Bay, making it the perfect spot for a Cornish beach break. Take the short walk along the South West Coastal Path and let the kids run riot on this fabulous two-mile stretch of golden sand. Even better, head to nearby Newquay for great shops, restaurants, surf schools and of course, heavenly Cornish Pasties.

Dartmouth TownDartmouth Town Trail, Dartmouth

A leisurely walk might not hold much appeal for kids of a certain age. But, chuck in swashbuckling tales of explorers, pirates, Vikings and kings and you've got a full afternoon's adventure on your hands! This fun 1.2mile trail takes in Dartmouth's ancient seafaring past, which dates back an incredible 4000 years BC. Add a strategic ice cream stop along the way and you're onto a winner. Later, re-live every detail back at Dartmouth Campsite - a gorgeous spot with fabulous sea views.

Bocastle HarbourBoscastle & Pentargon Waterfall, Bude

Picturesque though it is, there's much more to Boscastle than its natural harbour. Take the 1.7mile circuit towards Pentargon Waterfall and watch the kids screech in delight as water crashes through the harbour blowhole. Allow time to visit the spine-chilling witchcraft museum before returning back to the harbour via pretty inland paths. Hole up at Bude Campsite less than 6 miles away, a glorious rural spot in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

ClimbingAdventure Wonderland, Verwood

There's a whirlwind of fun for kids aged between 3 and 10 years old at Adventure Wonderland. This popular theme park is a great break from the beach and boasts oodles of rides and attractions, not to mention its own entertainment team and a huge indoor play centre. It's an easy half hour drive from Verwood Campsite, a cracking hideaway based near the New Forest.

Drakes trailDrakes Trail, Tavistock

The famous Drake's Trail is a superb 21mile path linking Tavistock with Plymouth. It's a disused railway that cuts through wooded river valleys and across open moorland, taking hikers and bikers up close to fascinating history and wildlife. It's a fantastic way to explore some of Devon's beautiful scenery. Later, reward your weary limbs with a comfortable stay at Tavistock Campsite, a lovely spot on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.

For a 'Crealy' wild day out, this action-packed adventure park is hard to beat. We're not just talking rides and rollercoasters - although it's got those by the lorry load. This award-winning family theme park boasts over 100 animals, not to mention dozens of outdoor attractions set in glorious Devon countryside. Wind down at Teign Valley Campsite, a lovely family friendly site in Dartmoor National Park.

Frosty alpine adventures? Probably the last thing on your mind during a summer break. But Snowtrax is seriously cool (for more reasons than one) and a great day out for all ages. From Ski Bobs and snowboarding lessons to trampolines, swings and even a huge fort, there's more than enough to keep boredom at bay. Carry on the fun back at Verwood Campsite on the edge of the New Forest.

Splash Down Water ParkSplash Down Water Parks, Slapton Sands

Our gorgeous Slapton Sands Campsite is within a 45minute drive of Splashdown Water Park - an awesome attraction right next to Goodrington Beach. It's wet 'n wild fun all the way, from the heart stopping Devil's Drop and Wild Kamikaze to tumbling tyre rides, Submarine Splash and Tiddler's Fun Pool for the little ones - all set against the beautiful backdrop of Tor Bay.

National lobsterNational Lobster Hatchery, Tregurrian

It might not sound like a memorable day out, but the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow really is a great place to visit. The marine conservation charity seeks to improve marine wildlife, which in this case involves raising baby lobsters to release into the wild. Come face-to-claw with lobsters young and old, and meet the experts to learn more about the charity's important work. Kick back at Tregurrian Campsite, Newquay, less than half an hour's drive from the hatchery.

Cannonteign FallsCanonteign Falls, Teign Valley 

England's highest manmade waterfall is a spectacle in itself. On top of that, Canonteign's gorgeous grounds are home to 7 gorgeous lakes, a children's nature trail, expansive wetlands and woodlands, a play area, zip wire, mini assault course, and best of all, giant fluffy bunnies! Our lovely Teign Valley Campsite, with its own children's play area and games room, is the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures.

Watermouth CastleWatermouth Castle and Theme Park, Lynton

Overlooking the picturesque Watermouth Cove, this Victorian castle is a treasure trove of fun experiences. There are rides for all ages, a mind-boggling maze, dungeon labyrinths, crazy fountain golf, a water show extravaganza, glorious gardens... and gnomes. Lots of gnomes. Pitch up at Lynton Campsite for sea views and a cracking site close to the beach.

Nothing screams drama like a 14th century cliff top fort dripping with towers, turrets, ship-sinking cannons, and gruesome tales of civil war. It's like 'Horrible Histories' has come to life - and the kids will love it. Even better, it's less than two miles from our superb Dartmouth Campsite, with resplendent sandy beaches, moorland and hills right on your doorstep.

St Michaels MountSt Michael's Mount, Sennen Cove

No trip to Cornwall is complete without visiting St Michael's Mount - but be sure to keep a close eye on the tide! With its ancient cobbles, castle walls, medieval pathways and sub-tropical gardens, this mini marvel will live with you long after you return to the mainland. Sennen Cove Campsite is less than half an hour's drive away, a spectacle in its own right and the perfect place to re-live the memories.

Based near the pretty Saxon town of Tiverton, Knighthayes Court is a treasure trove of gardens, parkland and woods - in other words, the ideal place for the kids to run off some steam. Think den building, bug hunting, nature trails and play areas. Take the scenic route back to Teign Valley Campsite - a beautiful spot in Dartmoor National Park with breathtaking views.

With a name like 'Jurassic Skyline', you can be sure of something pretty spectacular. Hop onboard Weymouth's impressive gondola and rise to a lofty height of 174ft, where you'll experience a 360 panorama with magnificent views across the Jurassic Coast, Nothe Fort, Portland, and Weymouth Harbour. Come back to earth with a slap-up barbeque at Moreton Campsite, our beautiful site just half an hour's drive from Weymouth.

Monkey WorldMonkey World, Corfe Castle

Go bananas at Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, where your little monkeys will come face-to-face with rescued chimps, gibbons, orang-utans and lemurs, and learn more about the incredible work of the animal welfare charity. Swing over to Corfe Castle Campsite and enjoy a few nights in the gorgeous Purbeck Hills, with Blue Flag beaches on your doorstep.

Paradise parkParadise Park, Sennen Cove

Tear yourself away from the beach for a fantastic day out at Paradise Park - an impressive wildlife refuge with over 140 species and more than 650 birds. With daily events, feeding time talks, flying displays, and even a huge indoor play centre, it's a winner for all ages. Sennen Cove Campsite near Land's End is the perfect refuge for wowed-out youngsters.

PiratePirates and Mermaids Week, Teign Valley

With over 600 years of history, Powderham Castle is an incredible place to visit at any time of year. During the last week in August, the castle comes alive with a spectacular Pirates and Mermaids Week featuring Captain Jack Sparrow and his grisly pocketwatch crew. Later, set sail for Teign Valley Campsite in Dartmoor National Park, a great spot with excellent family facilities.

Pennywell farmPennywell Farm, California Cross

Nothing cures a case of the grumps better than a cuddle with cute and fluffy farmyard friends - and Pennywell Farm in south Devon has got those in abundance! With alpacas, rabbits, shire horses, ponies, lambs, bouncing goats and miniature pigs, not to mention fun activities like tractor rides and crazy golf, there's no time for tantrums. Our California Cross Campsite in the stunning South Hams (nothing to do with piggies) is just 20 minutes' drive away.

Lay a blanket amidst rolling farmland overlooking the sea on the north Cornish coast, and enjoy three days of live music, dance workshops, delicious vegetarian food and oodles of kids' entertainment. Nothing screams summer holiday fun like the Lawn Mower Racing Grand Prix. Yep, you heard right. Watch pro-mowers battle for victory at this high-octane family festival, with all manners of side attractions including Segways, Zorbs, bungee trampolines, classic cars, live music and more. Rock up at Cheddar Campsite in the Mendip Heights, which is surrounded by timeless attractions including Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Longleat and Weston-super-Mare.

Rumbling steam engines, vintage cars, military displays, market stalls and children's attractions - need we say more? The annual Torbay Steam Fair is a terrific day out for kids (and big kids too). It's a pleasant 12-mile coast and country drive from our Slapton Sands Campsite, a fabulous family site with sea views, great facilities and beaches within walking distance.

Camping in Devon isn't all about big days out and attractions. Kick back and relax with a glass of something cool and refreshing while the kids run riot in Umberleigh Campsite's fantastic play areas and footie pitch. Free tennis lessons are on offer during school holidays, and there's also a games barn with a pool table, table tennis, skittle alley, table football and a TV.

Small yet mighty, Teign Valley is a super family campsite with spacious pitches and picturesque views. It's home to excellent facilities along with a children's play area - perfect for letting off some steam at the end of the day. Speaking of which, Teign Valley is within a stone's throw of excellent day trips including Canonteign Falls, Fernworthy Reservoir and Stone Lane Gardens. Occupying a picturesque spot in Dartmoor National Park, it's surrounded by wide open spaces and wooded valleys.
