There's so much to love about a family camping escape. No flights, no tiresome check-in, no costly hotels - just wholesome, outdoorsy fun in some of the most picturesque corners of the British Isles. Enjoy real family time together in one of 108 Club Sites, which are all beautifully maintained and well-equipped for a family adventure.

Many of the best sites are clustered in England's South West, where long happy days revolve around sandy beaches, family festivals, tot-friendly attractions and calorific cream teas. From miniature pony rides and fluffy farmyard friends to sandcastles, forest trails and bug hunts, it's all here in this captivating corner of the country.

Below, we've picked out a few of our favourite activities - complete with the best family campsites - that tots and grown-ups alike will love. Miniature PonyMiniature Pony Centre, Tavistock

The residents of Dartmoor's Miniature Pony Centre are fluffy, cuddly and downright adorable. Take your little ones to meet these mini marvels, along with many other animals including donkeys, heavy horses, piglets, lambs and chicks. Pitch up on the other side of Dartmoor National Park at our scenic Tavistock Campsite, a great spot with spacious family facilities.

Dairy LandDairyland Farmworld, Tregurrian

Perfect for budding young farmers, DairyLand Farmworld serves up all manners of tot-friendly attractions. Think slides, nature trails, tractor rides, pony rides, an indoor play centre and even tours of the milking parlour. It's good, wholesome fun come rain or shine, and it's just 20 minutes from our superb Tregurrian Campsite near Newquay.

Shiver me timbersShiver me Timbers! Pirates Ahoy at Tyntesfield, Cheddar

Steer your shipful of scallywags in the direction of Wraxall, North Somerset, for an awesome pirate adventure in August. Experience life on the ocean waves as Tyntesfield is invaded by a motley band of pirates and their cannon, and follow the clues along the Pirate Trail to find the treasure. Carry on the adventure at Cheddar Campsite, a picturesque site in the Mendip Hills just 30-40 minutes' drive from Wraxall.

Bude CanalBude Canal - the Aqueduct Trail, Bude

Tucked away in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near north Cornwall's best bathing and surfing beaches, there are plenty of reasons to visit our Bude Campsite. Get to know the area better by tackling the Bude Canal and Aqueduct Trail, a lovely circular route that winds through the pretty borderlands of Devon and Cornwall. The going is generally flat and easy, and there are plenty of pitstops for refreshments along the way.

Eggesford ForestEggesford Forest Walk - 3 miles, Umberliegh

Breathe in the heavenly scent of pines and earthy terrain along the Eggesford Forest Walk, which boasts a glorious network of wooded trails. The full circuit is 3 miles, with a picnic area and toilet facilities at Hilltown Wood. Later, put your feet up at Umberleigh Campsite, a peaceful family friendly spot in the Taw Valley with a children's play area and games room.

Stove Country ParkStover Country Park - 2 mile trail, Teign Valley

On the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Stover Country Park offers glorious natural surroundings in 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake and marsh. Take the 2-mile Stover trail and look out for the Aerial Walkway, a pushchair-friendly treetop walk. Enjoy a picnic with the little ones before heading back to nearby Teign Valley Campsite, a small friendly site on the northern edge of Dartmoor.

The camel trailThe Camel Trail, Tregurrian 

Just one of many free family activities in Cornwall, the Camel Trail is a fantastic way to explore some of the wonderful scenery in this corner of the world. Although you might not tackle all 18 miles, it's a well-surfaced multi use trail that's ideal for walkers, cyclists and pushchairs. Rest your limbs at Tregurrian Campsite, a superb seaside base, with a well-earned glass of something cool and refreshing.

Conigre MeadConigre Mead Nature Reserve, Devizes

Spot butterflies, dragonflies, birds and other wildlife at the lovely Conigre Mead Nature Reserve. Follow the level pushchair-friendly trail around its ponds and wildflower-rich grassland, and enjoy a picnic overlooking the Bristol Avon. Just a few miles away is Devizes Campsite, a quiet well-located site with excellent amenities, a children's play area and local fishing.

Tall tree trailTall Trees Trail Walk, Minehead

The magnificent castle and estate at Dunster is a real treat, and the Tall Trees Trail Walk is a wonderful way to soak up the grandeur of this incredible place. It's home to the tallest tree in England - a towering Douglas Fir soaring over 60 metres - and also the tallest magnolia in England, reaching 24 metres. The level 0.8 mile trail is pushchair (and piggy back) accessible, and our lovely coastal Minehead Campsite is just on the other side of town.

Carne beachCarne Beach, Veryan

Just 3 miles from our lovely Veryan Campsite is Carne Beach, which forms the eastern part of a huge sandy beach in Gerrans Bay. This long strip of sand and shingle joins with Pendower Beach at low tide, forming a lovely mile-long sweep that's sheltered by the Nare Head peninsula. There's a National Trust car park at the top of Carne Beach and it's an easy short drive from the beach back to Veryan Campsite.

Blackpool Sands beachBlackpool Sands, Dartmouth

Our lovely Dartmouth Campsite is within easy reach of several beaches, including the spectacular Blackpool Sands - an award-winning shingle bay featuring all manners of family entertainment. Build sandcastles in the sand pits, splash about in the shallows, hire a kayak or paddle boards, or simply kick back on a deckchair and relax.

Widemouth BayWidemouth Bay, Bude

Just 3 miles south of Cornwall's surfing hotspot of Bude is Widemouth Bay - a glorious ribbon of sand that stretches for almost 1.5 miles. Once a hotspot for smugglers, it has undergone a change of fortunes and is now a superb family beach. There is free car parking at both ends of the bay, public toilets, showers and a beach café. After a relaxing day by the seaside, Bude Campsite is an easy 10minute drive away.

Charlestown regattaCharlestown Regatta Week, Veryan

Pick your spot along the charming Charlestown waterfront and enjoy a week-long spectacle of daft fun. There's water golf, raft races, donkey derby, a carnival, live music, and more than enough to entertain the little ones. Veryan Campsite is an easy half hour drive away, occupying a gorgeous spot on the Roseland Peninsula with a fishing lake and children's play area.

Dragons DenDragons Den - NMMC, Veryan

Step aside, entrepreneurs. The real Dragon's Den lies in Falmouth's National Maritime Museum where the world of Viking myths, monsters and legends come to life in spectacular fashion. Tots will have a blast dressing up and battling make-believe dragons in this action-packed playzone. Rural Veryan Campsite is the perfect place to wind down after a hard day's dragon-slaying.

Paradise ParkParadise Park and Jungle Barn, Sennen Cove

This award-winning wildlife sanctuary isn't just a refuge for amazing animals like parrots, flamingos, penguins and red pandas. It also has its own Fun Farm with mini donkeys, pygmy goats, rabbits and guinea pigs, not to mention a huge indoor soft play centre and gorgeous exotic gardens. After all that excitement, gorgeous Sennen Cove Campsite on Land's End Peninsula is the perfect tonic.

Blue reef aquariumBlue Reef Aquarium, Tregurrian

Grown-ups, you're going to love this as much as the little ones. The Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, just 5 miles south of Tregurrian Campsite, is a fascinating underwater wildlife adventure. Get up close and chillingly personal with reef sharks, octopus and caiman crocodiles, see Loggerhead turtles gliding through the water, explore colourful corals and come face-to-claw with crabs, lobsters and shrimps.

Bodmin TrainBodmin Train Ride, Tregurrian

Hitch a ride along the Bodmin Railway and experience the thrill of gliding through captivating Cornish countryside in a real steam locomotive. The kids will think they've been whisked off to the Island of Sodor, and you can even treat Grandad to a driver experience course! Later, let off some steam at lovely Tregurrian Campsite near Newquay, where you can kick back and re-live the day's adventures with a refreshing sundowner and gorgeous ocean views.

Wednesday MarketWednesday Market at Warren Farm, Cheddar

There are plenty of reasons to stay at Cheddar Campsite, tucked away in the Mendip Hills. It's a stone's throw from the magnificent Cheddar Gorge, and it's also within a short drive of Warren Farm - home to a superb market every Wednesday throughout the summer. Pick out a gift, browse fresh produce and take home something scrummy for the barbeque. Visitors can park for free at the Weston Road entrance.

Lynton Lynmouth railwayLynton/Lynmouth Cliff Railway, Lynton

From its hilltop perch above the stunning Exmoor coast, Lynton Campsite is a real family treat. Even better, it's just a couple of miles from the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway - a funicular lift that glides gently down the cliffs from Lynton to the town of Lynmouth, 500 feet below. Enjoy stunning views of Exmoor, the Bristol Channel and the North Devon Coastline as you go.

Few places are as captivating as Dunster Castle. Surrounded by dense woodlands and subtropical gardens, this ancient stronghold dates back to Norman times and oozes turbulent medieval tales. Dunster Castle is a must-see and a great place for kids to explore. It's pushchair friendly too, and the views across the Bristol channel, Quantock hills and Exmoor are quite something. Relax and re-live the experience back at Minehead Campsite, just 15 minutes' drive away.

Trereife gardnesTrereife House, Sennen Cove

Take a tour of the beautiful family-owned Trereife House (under 16s go free) and wander its glorious gardens, keeping an eye out for the rare Iranian Medlar plant. Explore the quaint walled garden, filled with fruit trees, before rewarding yourself with a cup of tea and a slab of something calorific in the cafe. The lovely Sennen Cove Campsite with its sea views and children's play area is the perfect place to ease springs.

Pennywell FarmPennywell Farm, Dartmouth

From piggy cuddles and egg collecting to bottle feeding and treasure hunts, there are tons of toddler activities at Pennywell Farm. Home to countless cute and fluffy residents, a trip here is guaranteed to put a smile on everyone's face. Later, snuggle down at Dartmouth Campsite on the south Devon coast for easy access to Blackpool Sands, Slapton Sands and Torcross Beach.

Dinos trainDinosaur Train, Charmouth

Give your little monsters a treat they won't forget on the fantastic Dinosaur Train - an adventure-filled tram ride with music, stories and dinosaur activities. Set off from Seaton on a dinosaur-themed enclosed tram, passing through two nature reserves on the Axe Estuary, all the way to the Nature Trackers' Adventure Area at Colyton Station (book via www.tram.co.uk). Continue the dinosaur adventures at the lovely Charmouth Campsite, with easy access to Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast.

This fantastic 2-day family festival offers a great mix of live music, comedy, food and entertainment. Even better, it's a short drive from the charming Charmouth Campsite with its children's play area and family facilities. It's in a great spot from which to explore Dorset's famous Jurassic Coast, with the beaches of Lyme Regis, West Bay and Weymouth within easy reach.

Lyme regisLyme Regis Regatta & Carnival Week, Charmouth

Dino-mad youngsters will love exploring the famous fossil beaches of Lyme Regis, and big kids will get a kick out of it too. Visit between 6th and 14th August for a fabulous fun carnival featuring fireworks, processions, regatta races, activities and events for all ages. Nearby Charmouth Campsite is a great springboard from which to explore the local area and Jurassic Coast.

As if the gorgeous sandy beaches and family attractions aren't enough to draw you to Weymouth this summer, its 2-day carnival should do the trick. Held midweek on 16th and 17th August 2016, it's a fun-filled affair with all manners of hands-on activities, processions, stalls and games. Nearby Moreton Campsite, tucked away in a quiet rural setting, is the perfect escape from Weymouth's buzzing beachfront.

Newton AbbotNewton Abbot Carnival Week, Dartmouth

Soak up some traditional family fun at Newton Abbot Carnival, held during the first week in July. With various events including a duck race, tractor pull, a fun run and a vibrant procession, youngsters will be flabbergasted by the colourful carnival sights. Come evening, put your feet up at Dartmouth Campsite, a lovely spot on Devon's south coast with easy access to the region's finest beaches.

Farmers MarketFarmers Market Lynton Town Hall, Lynton 

There are plenty of reasons to stay at lovely Lynton Campsite, perched above the stunning Exmoor coast and a short hop from the Victorian seaside resort itself. During the summer, head to the Town Hall on the first Saturday of every month to browse a great selection of market stalls, and pick out fresh local produce ready for the evening's barbeque.

The pretty Somerset village of Porlock hosts a fun family fayre on 7th August 2016, featuring all manners of attractions including craft and trade stalls, children's races, a fun dog show, arena demonstrations, classic cars, and oodles of things to do for all ages. There's free entry for kids and plenty of free parking too. Pitch up at nearby Minehead Campsite, just outside Exmoor National Park.

Plant SurveyPlant Survey & Bug Hunt, California Cross

This is a great way to educate the little ones about local plant and bug life. Wander around Loddiswell's beautiful wildflower meadows and Andrew's Wood, part of Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and do your bit by helping to complete the annual plant survey. Don't forget to bring a packed lunch! Carry on the wildlife theme back at California Cross Campsite just 3 miles away, a glorious spot in the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Secret world of wildlifeSecret World of Wildlife,  Slapton Sands

Pitch up at Slapton Sands Campsite for gorgeous views, great facilities and easy access to South Devon's best family beaches. Those lucky enough to be here on 25th July 2016 can join the Slapton Ley Field Centre staff from 10am - 12noon on a free bug hunting excursion! Let the little ones get gleefully grubby as they peek under logs and into bushes, looking for beetles, spiders, worms and more. Booking is essential, call 07967 497 624.

Teddy Bear PicnicTeddy Bears' Picnic at Avon Valley Railway Station, Cheddar

Children who bring a teddy bear to Avon Valley Railway Station on 10th July get to travel free on steam and diesel hauled trains. There's a whole host of fun activities throughout the day including balloon modelling, Punch and Judy, arts and crafts, teddy bear hunt and of course, picnic baskets - available to buy from the station. On your way back to Cheddar Campsite, take a detour to the lovely Chew Valley Lake for a gentle waterside stroll.
