Beaches in Lincolnshire

Market towns, fens, rolling wolds and fun family-friendly beaches. Camping near the coast doesn't get much better than Lincolnshire.

The Lincolnshire coast is home to some of England's best-loved beaches - from the big-hitters of Skegness and Cleethorpes to endless ribbons of gloriously empty, dune-backed sands. Not to mention mile upon mile of Nature Reserves of course, where sand banks and shifting dunes provide the perfect environment for grey seals and other wildlife.

Somewhere between the classic seaside frivolity and quiet secluded reserves is Mablethorpe - a seaside town and treasured corner of the English coast that's just the ticket for a coastal camping holiday.

Find out more about the Camping and Caravanning Club's Lincolnshire site, which is just a mile from Mablethorpe Beach, along with some of the best local beaches, below.

Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire

Just a mile's walk from the Campsite is Mablethorpe's fantastic long sandy beach, a real family affair with shallow shores, safe bathing and amusements galore. Backed by grassy dunes with plenty of bucket and spade territory, this superb award-winning beach is ideal for a day by the seaside. It's easily accessible from the town and lifeguards patrol the beach during the peak holiday season, plus you'll find oodles of local facilities including car parking, toilets, cafes and restaurants along the seafront.

Close to the sands you'll find everything you would expect from a classic English seaside resort, including amusement arcades, crazy golf, a fairground, and even donkey rides. Dogs are welcome on the beach from October to April.

For a slightly quieter beach experience, head to Sutton-on-Sea Beach (pictured), just 3 miles from Mablethorpe Campsite. Here you'll find a small seaside town with an excellent sandy beach that's popular with families. Colourful beach huts line the seafront and there's a smattering of facilities including cafes, shops, toilets and a children's paddling pool.

Further south, around a 30-minute drive from the campsite is Ingoldmells South Beach. It's close to Skegness and in addition to a lovely sandy beach, it's packed to the hilt with attractions including the Fantasy Island theme park, amusements, rides and seaside shops.

Or for a completely different experience, head north from Mablethorpe to the extensive Donna Nook National Nature Reserve, 12 miles away. If you're visiting between November and December, you may have the chance to see grey seals with their pups near the sand dunes (find out more from the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust).

As for the sands, Donna Nook is home to over 6 miles of coastline between Grainthorpe Haven in the north and Saltfleet in the south. Most of the dunes are accessible all year round (watch out for red flags which bar entry for safety reasons), with a network of paths and trails offering visitors the chance to enjoy the Reserve's glorious scenery and wildlife.

Slightly closer to the campsite, en route to Donna Nook, is Theddlethorpe Beach. Based just 10-15 minutes away from Mablethorpe, the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve is home to a vast expanse of grassy sand dunes and a wonderful Nature Reserve. Various paths and sandy trails lead through the Reserve, along riverbanks and down to the sea. The beach itself is sparse, sandy and more often than not, gloriously empty - perfect for a bracing dip or a reflective stroll.

The Reserve borders Theddlethorpe to the east and is accessible from Rimac, Churchill Lane, Brickyard Lane and Crook Bank - each of which has a small carpark. At Rimac there is a larger car park and nature trails that are wheelchair accessible.
