Spectacular Places to Watch the Sunset in the UK

There are many wonderful places to sit and watch the sunset in the UK. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks, and spectacular lakes are all great options. We’ve highlighted some of our top choices below in no particular order.

Take a few deep breaths, enjoy the serenity, and capture a picture or two in these top sunset locations.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Isle of Skye Sunset

The breathtaking Isle of Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides, with a rugged landscape and plenty of adventure to be had. There are two standout locations to experience the sunset while camping on Skye. Neist Point is one of the most photographed locations on Skye and the dramatic cliffside and lighthouse offer an amazing panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean as the sun goes down. The Old Man of Storr is another incredibly famous photography spot with large standing rock formations.

Beadnell Bay, Northumberland

Beadnell Bay Sunset

Northumberland’s landscape, including golden sandy beaches, ruinous castles, and incredible coastal vantage points, means there are plenty of chances to catch a great sunset. The large, sandy Beadnell Bay, just minutes away from our Beadnell Bay Club Site, is perfect for a sunset stroll. A little further up the coast is Bamburgh Castle, a medieval fortress sitting above the beach and offering a brilliant sunset view.

Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales

Brecon Beacons Sunset

The Brecon Beacons National Park and surrounding valleys have some of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes in the UK. The obvious choice amongst hikers is to venture up some of the most popular peaks like Pen y Fan to watch the sunset, but bear in mind that you’ve got to get back down. The Usk Reservoir, within easy reach of our Rhandirmwyn Club Site, is not only one of the best places to enjoy stargazing in the UK but also a wonderful spot for catching the sunset.

South Downs National Park, Sussex

South Downs Sunset

With its gorgeous green pastures, sweeping views and rolling hills, the South Downs offers terrific views of the UK sunset. You’ll be able to see the sunset with the South Downs as a beautiful backdrop at all of our Club Sites in this area, but there are a few popular spots to check out. Harting Down, one of the largest areas of chalk downland offers dramatic hilltop views and a car park at the top. Bignor Hill, just a 20-minute drive from our Graffham Club Site, is part of the South Downs Way, making for a lovely sunset stroll.

Lake District National Park, Cumbria

Lake District Sunset

The Lake District is simply bursting with places to perch to watch glorious sunsets, with mountains, lakes and valleys providing the perfect backdrop to the orange and pink skyline. The Neolithic Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick offers panoramic views of the mountains and a mystical setting. Another option that does not require a hike is the shoreline of Wastewater, which looks over to the peaks of Scafell Pike and Great Gable. Those who are prepared for a hike (and the darkening journey back down) could choose to view the sunset from Catbells, Harter Fell or Orrest Head.

St Davids, the UK’s smallest city, is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Its coastline offers a multitude of locations to witness the sunset. St Davids Head, a rugged outcrop, provides a dramatic setting for a sunset walk. Whitesands Bay, a popular beach near our St Davids Club Site, offers a clear, unobstructed view of the horizon, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the setting sun.

Cheddar Gorge Sunset

This part of Somerset is bursting with ancient monuments, rocky outcrops, valleys, and hills, all of which make for the perfect backdrop for a beautiful sunset. There are several wonderful viewpoints from the top of Cheddar Gorge, by far one of the most famous landmarks in the area and a great place to catch the sunset.

Sandbanks, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and the Old Harry Rocks are just a few of the fantastic locations in Dorset to watch the sunset. You’ll find spots all along the Jurassic Coast to appreciate the golden hues of nightfall, including sandy beaches and blustery clifftops.

Lands End Sunset

Known for its picture-perfect coastline, Cornwall has some brilliant places to admire the breathtaking sunset. The westernmost point of mainland England, Land’s End, is an obvious choice with views over the Atlantic Ocean and rugged cliffs providing an amazing backdrop. Sennen Cove Club Site is a fantastic nearby base with Sennen Cove itself being another fantastic location to watch the sun go down in Cornwall. St. Ives, Godrevy Lighthouse and Tintagel Castle are just a few more locations to note, especially if you’re planning a road trip around Cornwall.
