Established in 1753, The British Museum has a permanent collection in excess of eight million items which have been sourced from around the World. The emphasis of the museum is on the history and growth of human civilisation and culture across the millennia. Many of the items in the museum are mysterious and have remarkable stories to discover. It is one of the most visited places in London and is generally free to access. Some of the most enigmatic items on display include: the infamous Elgin Marbles, The helmet of Sutton Hoo, the Mechanical Galleon, a crystal skull and a murdered Egyptian mummy called Ginger.
