Built over 300 years ago by Sir John Vanbrugh, today the house remains home to the Howard family. Marvel at dramatic interiors, including Castle Howard’s iconic dome, and world-renowned art collections with, friendly and knowledgeable guides sharing Castle Howard's stories and history.

Exhibitions include Duty Calls: Castle Howard in Time of War, Brideshead Restored – the story of a fire in 1940 and the filming of Brideshead Revisited at Castle Howard, and a William Morris display detailing the relationship between the artist and the Howard family.

Outside, discover more with acres of parkland dotted with lakes and temples, statues of myths and legend, serpentine woodland paths, walled garden with ornamental kitchen garden, children’s trails and playground. The vast rolling parkland provides plenty of space for the whole family to explore with family friendly activities taking place throughout school holidays.

Stunning seasonal displays means there’s always something to enjoy in the gardens, from the carpet of golden daffodils and the sweet scent of roses to the vivid colour of rhododendrons and the rich tones of autumn; with the lakes and woodland providing an ideal habitat for an array of wildlife too.

Castle Howard’s stable courtyard is the perfect shopping destination with gift shop, book and toy shop, farm shop, café and coffee shop and the Castle Howard garden centre just a short walk away. Open year round and with plentiful free parking and free entry the courtyard is the ideal place to stop for a bite to eat or spot of shopping.
