Visiting Corfe Castle
Corfe Castle looms mysteriously above the village of Corfe in the county of Dorset and was built alongside a natural path through the Purbeck hills.
King John (The Bad) and his son Henry III both enlarged the fortress. It was finally destroyed in 1645 after a long siege by parliamentarian forces.
It is now an atmospheric and beautiful ruin. The famous children’s author, Enid Blyton, based her description of Kirrin castle on the ruins. It is reputed to be haunted by a number of phantoms including a shimmering headless lady.
