Visiting Hailes Abbey
Hailes Abbey was founded in the picturesque Cotswolds countryside in 1246 by the Earl of Cornwall. Once an important monastery, all that is left today are tranquil ruins.
In recent years, a museum has opened, uncovering stories of the monks who worshipped at the abbey for nearly three centuries. Also on display is the rare fragment of a 14th century monk’s spectacles.
Pick up one of the free audio guides and let the narrator re-erect the ruins and take you on a journey through its fascinating history.
There is parking located just 20 metres from the abbey ruins and dogs on leads are welcome to roam the grounds. There are no eating facilities but the tranquil setting and shade from the ruins make for a lovely picnic spot.
