Jedburgh Castle was fought over during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and was demolished by the Scots in 1409.

In 1823 a jail was built on the site but this closed in 1868. The building was restored to an 1820s appearance in 1964 and opened to the public as Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum.

Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum illustrates 1820s prison life in reconstructed rooms using audio visual period artefacts.

The Castle Jail also brings the history of the Royal Burgh of Jedburgh to life, describing the traditions, industries and important individuals of this historic Scottish town.
