It's goodbye from me… and her

Hello everyone! Sorry I haven’t ‘blogged’ for a while, but I’ve been trying very hard to get Kizzy to pose for a photo wearing a Santa hat. This is the best the chauffeur could do – honestly, I’ve said it before, you just can’t get the staff! Meanwhile, my son Walter has been posing in his ‘elf’ costume, which I thought you might like to see. You won’t get me in such tacky seasonal outerwear – I do have certain standards to keep!

Kizzy wears a Santa hatSadly, this will be my last blog for the Club. After three very enjoyable years, in which I started off caravanning with my dear pal Molly, who died when her life was really just beginning, it’s time to put away my pen.

I’d love to carry on but the maid and chauffeur now have such busy working lives, we won’t be able to get away as often as we’d all like – which is a shame, because we traded in our little caravan Milly for a bigger one last year so we could do more touring!

However, I’m hoping that when we do get away for our holidays, we’ll be heading to some of the Club Sites that I’ve enjoyed so much during the past few years.

Although the East Yorkshire seaside town of Filey holds many happy memories for me, and is quite close to the spacious Club Site at Scarborough, I think my heart is yearning for another trip to Nairn, where there is a beautiful Club Site just a woodland walk away from this Scottish idyll.

Walter makes a cute elfThe beach there is splendid, and dotted with golden gorse bushes, which the maid says reminded her of
coconut-scented sun lotion. We went there in early summer when I was very young – I’m nearly nine now, 63 in dog years, and so feel as if I’ve earned my retirement! – and I’d love Kizzy to see these wide expanses of silvery sand.

I’m so pleased to have been able to visit so many delightful places in Britain and identify stunning beaches and dog-friendly cafes. In fact, I found a great cafe on our most recent visit to Scarborough. It’s the CALF cafe in Eastborough, a street just off the busy beachfront thoroughfare, and it welcomes dogs. Check out this rogues’ gallery (I’m not on the photos, although I can confirm you do get a warm welcome and tasty food!).

Chauffeur Graham waves goodbyeThe menu is entirely vegan and vegetarian but, as the owners say, you don’t have to be a veggie to enjoy their cuisine! Over the winter it’s open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm, so if you fancy venturing to the east coast to blow away the cobwebs, here’s a great place to warm up afterwards where four-legged friends are always welcome.

We remember Molly fondly, and can now laugh about some of the daft things she did – such as when she rolled on the tatty remains of a dead badger when we stayed near Weymouth. Kizzy shares some of Molly’s characteristics – she loves to boss me around, and pats her paw against the maid’s shins when she feels she deserves a morsel of her dinner. How naughty is she…? I would never do that!

Ted and Molly in CornwallWe’ve also enjoyed going to some of the Club’s Certificated Sites, which I would heartily recommend if you like to get away from it all and don’t need all the attractions that you find at many commercial holiday parks.

For just a few pounds per night (dogs go free, remember, at all Club Sites) you and your canine chums can enjoy a get-away-from-it-all break at one of dozens of smaller sites, both coastal and countryside.

So I’d like to wish everyone who has read any of my blogs over the past three years a merry Christmas and a happy new year – and who knows, Kizzy and I might meet you one day at a Club Site!

Happy camping and caravanning … it’s goodbye from her, and from me.
