Castle ruins

1. Explore Barnard Castle

Just minutes away from our Barnard Castle Club Site is Barnard Castle. This medieval fortress was built by Bernard Balliol between 1112 and 1132, and later, the name was used as inspiration for the market town and our campsite.

The castle itself played a crucial role in English history, particularly during the Rising of the North in 1569, when it was besieged by supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots. Later, it became the property of Richard III, but once he died, the castle fell into ruins. Today, the castle ruins, managed by English Heritage, offer stunning views over the River Tees and a glimpse into the past.
