Big Sand Beach

1. Walk to the Fairy Lochs

Put your walking boots on to visit the group of freshwater lochans, known as the Fairy Lochs near Gairloch. You’ll want to visit on a fair-weather day as the walk can be strenuous, and the ground can be boggy. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views over the loch. This is also where you’ll find a memorial dedicated to lives lost in a WWII air crash.

2. Enjoy Big Sand Beach

This aptly named stretch of sand is well sheltered and perfect for enjoying sunsets with views out to the Hebrides. Whether you fancy a wild swim or a gentle stroll Big Sand Beach is ideal.

3. Book a boat tour

With a beautifully rugged coastline, a boat trip in Gairloch always leaves you wanting more. Aboard a boat at Gairloch Harbour to go wildlife spotting; you could see dolphins, whales, and even otters if you’re lucky!

4. Stargaze the night away

With minimal light pollution, Gairloch is a brilliant place to see the night sky. Wrap up warm to spend a few hours gazing at the night sky, if conditions allow you could even see the Northern Lights.  

5. Visit Inverewe Garden

On the edge of Loch Ewe, Inverewe Garden is teeming with exotic plant life. Explore the botanical gardens and keep an eye out for wildlife while there.

6. Soak up history at Gairloch Museum

Discover more about local history at the Gairloch Museum. Visit the converted nuclear bunker to view art exhibitions, join in with special events and learn all there is to know about the history and natural heritage of the North West Highlands.

7. Drive to Rua Reidh Lighthouse

It’s around a 30-minute scenic drive to Rua Reidh Lighthouse form Gairloch. The beautifully remote location is perfect for taking in the views and watching some coastal wildlife.

8. Hire a kayak

Go on an expert-led sea kayaking adventure for a completely different way to take in the breathtaking surroundings. There are several local companies with which to do this.

9. Explore Red Point Beach

Named due to its red-hued sands and dunes; Red Point Beach is another location worth exploring when camping in Gairloch. Take your binoculars and keep your eyes on the coastline.

10. Visit Loch Maree

Surrounded by beautiful pine forests, Loch Maree is the fourth-largest freshwater loch in Scotland. It’s also said to be one of the most scenic, with clear waters and pine forest surroundings.
