Overview
The Drying Green at Balintore salmon bagnet fishing station lies next to the harbour where you can fish or watch local fishermen landing their catch.
From the site, close to the NC500 and Orkney Ferry route, you can see the popular Mermaid of the North, the Moray Coast and also the scenic Shandwick Bay.
Part of the Pictish Trail runs through the villages – there is an ancient Pictish stone in Shandwick and a replica stone in Hilton. The John Ross Centre gives information about a local man who translated the New Testament into Korean. The base of the original Pictish Hilton stone is also there.
There is a public toilet adjacent to the site. There is a local shop and Pharmacy approximately 150m away, 2 hotels within 400m and a Community Centre with a Café, showers, tennis court, playpark and Post Office.
There are coastal walks, and inland trails nearby. You can explore the other nearby seaboard villages of Hilton, Shandwick, Portmahomack, Inver and Rockfield.
Tain (7 miles away) has an Asda, Tesco, Home Bargains, and Lidl supermarkets and small shops. Within a mile there is the Anta Pottery and Café.
This is a Certificated Site (CS). These select sites are small, privately run campsites that operate under the Club’s jurisdiction and can only accommodate up to 5 caravans or motorhomes and up to 10 trailer tents or tents*, unless express permission has been given by the Club to accommodate more. They range from secluded Hideaways to fully facilitated family-friendly sites, and are often found in locations where larger commercial sites are prohibited so you could be camping close to a beach or in the National Park, for example.
*Tents are not permitted on the majority of CS sites in Scotland
