Things to do whilst camping in Great Yarmouth

Beaches

No matter what season you visit the seaside town, you can relax and enjoy its clean, soft, sandy beaches all year round.

The Great Yarmouth coastline starts from Winterton-on-Sea in the north and stretches for 15 miles to Hopton-on-Sea in the south. Between that 15-mile stretch, you’ll find sand dunes, seaside amusement rides, bouncy castles and donkey rides.

For our campers that love watersports, you’ll never have a dull moment as Great Yarmouth has so many watersport activities to choose from, including, 

• Paddleboarding
• Surfing (for the best waves, we highly recommend visiting in winter)
• Canoeing
• Kayaking 
• Scuba diving
• Sailing 

If you don’t have a canoe or boat, then worry not, you can find several boat rentals close by and kickstart your adventure.

Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier

Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile sits between the two piers, Britannia Pier to the north and Wellington Pier to the south.

The piers are open during the day up until late at night, but we highly recommend heading down when the sun sets as they’re beautifully illuminated after dark.

Fishing 

Did you know that before Great Yarmouth transformed into a resort town, it was famous for its fishing ports and herring?

Herring was so popular that the town held a herring fair that lasted 40 days! But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of fish in the sea and whilst camping in Great Yarmouth you can have a go at catching your dinner.

If you’re not the biggest fan of herring, there’s also an abundance of bass, mackerel, bream, dogfish, garfish, smoothhound and pollack to catch during the summer and, during winter, cod. 

There are various fishing spots in Great Yarmouth, but we highly recommend checking specific locations as they may require fishing permits.  

Wildlife and nature

Whilst camping in Great Yarmouth, you must visit Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens. The beautiful gardens are designed to create homes for endangered animals forced out of their habitats due to climate change and deforestation.

Whilst visiting Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens, you can spot some of the world's most stunning and endangered creatures including, 

• Sumatran tigers (An estimated 400 Sumatran tigers left in the world)
• Red pandas 
• Snow leopards
• Amur leopard (The most endangered big cat with only 70 left in the wild)
• Meerkats
• Gibbons
• Otters
• Alligators and crocodiles

If you're a fan of reptiles and birds, the gardens include a variety of exotic and unique creatures you can spot on your visit.

Another brilliant family-friendly destination we recommend on your camping trip is Redwings Horse Sanctuary. The sanctuary rescues abandoned, mistreated and neglected horses and donkeys from across the UK, giving them a safe place to live. 

Their Great Yarmouth sanctuary is the largest one in the UK that houses hundreds of rescued horses, ponies and donkeys, which you can visit and pet.

Walking routes and hikes

Our campsites in Great Yarmouth have lovely walking routes perfect for dog walks, evening walks and walks with the family. The brilliant thing about our campsites in Great Yarmouth is that they’re conveniently located near beautiful beaches and stunning coasts with magnificent views. 

If you fancy something more challenging, Great Yarmouth has guided hikes, and walking routes you can sign up for that will help you navigate the town more confidently. 

Museums 

If you’re looking to explore the rich history of Great Yarmouth on your camping trip, then we highly recommend visiting the Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life. 

The museum tells the story of Great Yarmouth from its ice age origins to the present day. It’s an insightful and fun place to visit for all ages. 

For something more vibrant, the Upside Down House never fails to put a smile on visitors' faces. With everything, as the name suggests, upside down, the house is great fun for adults and kids.
