The Motorhome and Caravan Show, the country’s biggest showcase of leisure vehicles, returned to Birmingham’s NEC with a stellar show bursting with exciting new products.
One of the brightest stars of the show was Hymer’s Venture S - one of the first genuine rugged off-road campervans built by a major European manufacturer.
It has a rear elevating pop-top roof which fully inflates in less than three minutes thanks to a powerful compressor. Hymer calls the space its Instant Loft – and access is via a proper stairway with illuminated steps which have storage compartments built into them.
The rear lounge space features a tailgate that opens out into a sun deck when pitched up on site, with a hefty 350kg maximum load. The luxury and innovation of the Venture S doesn’t come cheap, expect to pay a hefty £212,000.
Swift Group, the UK’s largest leisure vehicle maker, has gone big for 2023, introducing three new motorhome ranges. The Ascari, a two-model range of narrow-bodied low profile coachbuilts on Fiat Ducato, offers a choice of two or four berths (from £66,995) .
The Carrera returns with a five-model range of Ducato-based panel van conversions in a dstinctive Lanzarote grey exteririor, priced from £65,995.
But the biggest news from Swift is the launch of the all-new Voyager, (right) a four-strong range of low-profile coachbuilts, all based on the Ford Transit chassis cab and built with Swift's SMART construction body shell. Each of the four models is a four berth, with belted travel seats and sleeping berths for four people and all with a B-licence friendly maximum weight of 3500kg.
Competitively priced from £66,595, they are well-specified and attractive family motorhome that offers fans of the blue oval an alternative to the ubiquitous Fiat Ducato.
A new addition to the Adamo range of Ford based motorhomes from Bailey is the 75-4T, a four berth van.
It has belted travel seats for four, with the rear belted seats converting to sofas on site.
There are twin beds above a garage space to the rear, plus a drop down bed above the front lounge, while a central washroom is split either side of the van separating the two areas.
Expect to pay £75,499.
The Playa C500 is an eye-catching limited edition pop-top campervan conversion from German manufacturer Burstner. Unusually it’s based on the Renault Trafic, and inside features a regular side kitchen layout. Interestingly the roof fully opens at the front – great for a spot of stargazing from bed. And it comes with a long list of extras as standard including sun awning, cooled glove box, a diesel parking heater and a multi-media system and a sat nav. Expect to pay an OTR price from £59,990.
A new range for 2023 from this German manufacturer, the Dethleffs Just Go motorhomes are based on the Ford Transit chassis cab.
There are six models and three layouts to choose from, all low profile coachbuilt models, and they all feature an extra wide – that is 70cm wide – door into the living quarters.
The 7055 EB model, which features twin single beds, costs a little under £80k.
Knaus has launched a completely new feature in its classy top-of-the-range AZUR caravan – a self-healing surface.
The furniture is also set at an angle, which can be a bit disconcerting until you get used to it, but the optical illusion means the caravan feels bigger inside.
A nice touch are the cleverly concealed storage compartments and shelves behind the fabric-covered Smart Wall.
The range includes four new layouts with prices starting from £36,250.
The smaller and more affordable compact Weinsberg CaraCito starts at around £16,000 and has plenty of stylish touches to make it stand out from the crowd while still fitting in all the essentials, including air conditioning with heating as standard.
One thing you won’t find in the CaraCito is gas. This is a fully-electric caravan with an induction hob for cooking and it comes in at a reasonable maximum mass of just 1,200kg. Available in five different layouts.
The Adria Altea has been completely updated for 2023 and the Avon is the larger sibling of the Dart (recently reviewed in Camping & Caravanning). It has some neat features to reduce weight, like fabric seat bases, and this classic family-friendly layout with room for grownu-ups at the front and up to four youngsters in their own space at the rear.
There are plenty of accessories to keep all members of the family happy, including a dog bed to protect the furniture from the four-footed family member. Prices start from £27,720.
French manufacturer Rapido has released a series of narrow A-class motorhomes that should make travelling around country lanes a little less stressful.
The three model range includes the C-class C86i, the largest of the compact models, with a caravan-style rear island bed layout, a second double bed that drops down over the cab if you need it, plus an L-shaped living room bench seat that converts to an occasional berth.
This year we’ve seen some quite significant prices on motorhomes at the show, but it’s still a surprise to see £80,000 on a caravan but this Eriba Touring 820 has a specification to match its price tag.
Its180 degree Panoramic windows front and back, leather upholstery, smart home features, self-levelling and relatively low drag are just a few of the features you’ll get for your money.
Marquis Leisure is teasing us with its new Lamacelle range, though you can't actually buy one at the show. These little French tourers – from another part of the Trigano Group - should be on Marquis forecourts from January next year so if you like the idea of a stripped down, practical, lightweight caravan you can register your interest now, ready for when they arrive in the country. The Fantaisy and Liberty models will each include two layouts one of which features a particularly stylish curved front seating area.
