Labour supports wild camping in England
Following the decision to restore the right to wild camp on Dartmoor, the Labour Party has reiterated that it would extend the right to all national parks in England if elected.
The party announced it would pass a right to roam act in January when the verdict against wild camping on Dartmoor was made. Shadow environment minister, Alex Sobel, echoed the party’s position to the Guardian following the verdict being overturned after a successful appeal from the national park against the ruling. He said: “Labour would legislate so that people visiting national parks have the right to wild camp, as well as expanding public access to woodlands and waterways.”
Green Party MP Caroline Lucas put forward the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (Amendment) Bill that includes a “right to camp on access land.” The Liberal Democrats also called on “the Government to bring forward new legislation to safeguard the rights of individuals to continue using National Park land for camping” within Early Day Motions back in January. However, neither currently have a majority support.
