New maps for old
Ordnance Survey will exchange old maps for discount vouchers until 20 March.
The Ordnance Survey trade-in scheme, which previously ran in 2014 when more than 10,000 obsolete paper maps were returned, offers outdoor-lovers the chance to send in their out-of-date paper maps to receive discount vouchers.
OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps are re-issued every two to five years, depending on how many changes have been recorded in the areas they cover. This means that maps can quickly become out-of-date.
Ordnance Survey hopes the scheme will prompt people to make sure they have the most accurate maps available for their outdoors adventures.
From February this year, new paper copies of OS Landranger and OS Explorer maps will include a code for a digital download of a copy of the map suitable for Android and iOS devices. The map return scheme offers one discount voucher for every bundle of maps received by OS. One map earns a £1.50 voucher, while 15 maps or over earns a £15 voucher to be spent in the OS online map shop.
Old maps sent in under the scheme will be recycled or reused wherever possible. The 2014 maps were used to help teach navigation skills to young people, and in art projects. The scheme runs until Sunday 20 March 2016. Find details on how to return maps here.
