The Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI SE Business hatchback was the overall winner at this year's Tow Car Awards
During a prize-giving ceremony at Woburn, Buckinghamshire, the Skoda Superb hatch was named this year's ultimate tow car following stringent testing of 41 vehicles in five weight categories.
Judges named the £22,500 car as the tenth Tow Car Awards champion, saying it was a hugely capable tow car for its size and “on price and ability, deserves to be this year’s winner”.
They compared it to last year’s winner, the VolksWagen Passat estate, but added that it was “thousands of pounds cheaper”.
Head tow car judge David Motton said: “The Skoda hugely impressed all our drivers. We put the Superb through lane-change tests, braking tests, acceleration tests, hill-start tests – it passed them all with flying colours. It’s also a hugely practical car. The Superb’s sheer value is the clincher – it’s an absolute bargain.”
Other winners on the night included the Honda HR-V, Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport and Jaguar XF. Ford’s Mondeo Vignale was named Best Petrol Tow Car, Suzuki picked up Best Ultra Light Tow Car for the Vitara, Seat’s Alhambra was the Best MPV and the Best Green Tow Car award went to the Kia Cee’d Sportwagon.
The Land Rover Discovery was also named Tow Car of the Decade.
Since 2007, the Club has teamed up with What Car? and Practical Caravan magazine to run the Tow Car Awards. The testing is also supported by Swift, AL-KO, Witter, Milenco and volunteers from the Club.
All the cars are put through a string of tough tests, and are assessed not just for their towing ability but also for their practicality, stability and solo driving.
