Spotlight south west: best places to camp and take in 630-mile South West Coast Path

South West Coast

8th April 2025

Coastal locations across Cornwall and Devon will be making their mark on the big screen this month, ahead of the release of a major film production that is certain to attract interest in the area.

The Camping and Caravanning Club has picked out its top locations in Devon and Cornwall that are located along the route of the 630-mile South West Coast Path, along with recommendations on the best campsites nearby.

With breathtaking views, a sense of adventure and diverse landscape, it’s the perfect destination to enjoy a sense of freedom this season, and the best way to get closer to it all is by camping.

Cool Cornwall

From the popular surfing spot at Newquay’s Fistral Beach through to peaceful bays such as Port Quin and rugged headlands like Rame Head, Cornwall is a walker’s paradise. Tregurrian Club Site has 14 great beaches nearby, with the two-mile stretch of sand at Watergate Bay a short walk from the campsite along a coastal path.

Stay at Tregurrian or one of the Club’s other 35+ Cornwall campsites.

Devine Devon

North Devon has a varied topography, from flat coastal wetlands near the village of Braunton to the Valley of the Rocks, a U-shaped valley found half a mile inland from the coast and just three miles from Lynton Club Site. The campsite has a hilltop location with views across the Bristol Channel, all the way to South Wales.

Stay at Lynton or another of the Club’s 40+ Devon campsites.

Camping and touring are good accommodation options for anyone who wants to complete either the full 630-mile path or just a small section of it this summer. Campsite stays are flexible and allow holidaymakers breathing space to rethink travel plans, or if they don’t want to stick to a planned itinerary.

Sabina Voysey, the Club’s Director General, said: “The Camping and Caravanning Club has many 5-star rated campsites in both Devon and Cornwall and while early booking is always recommended, camping and caravanning continues to offer the flexibility that we all look for when travelling.

“This is especially true of Cornwall and Devon, where it’s only too possible to fall in love with that cosy beachfront café or pristine beach and never want to leave.”

Nine Club Sites are within easy reach of the South West Coast Path, with pitches from as little £33 a night, based on two adults camping on a full-service pitch.

The rest are member-exclusive campsites across the region that offer holidaymakers anything from back-to-basics camping through to unique experiences. Campsites can range from a small parcel of land on a smallholding with just the essentials, through to sites that operate next door to working farms. All of these campsites take no more than five caravans or motorhomes and up to ten tents at any one time.
