Hedingham Castle in Essex has a magnificent stone keep and was built around 1135AD on a natural spur of rock. It is believed to be one of the best examples of Norman defensive architecture anywhere in Britain. The medieval keep has four floors and is generally intact. It is said to have a lost secret tunnel and was used as an aircraft signalling station during WWII. It stages regular festivals and has often been used as a film location.
