Caerlaverock Castle is situated just south of Dumfries, near the former port settlement of Glencaple.

The castle is an isolated, unique fort built upon the site of Roman and Celtic fortifications.

Overlooking the Solway Firth, the castle is a moated, triangular structure that was besieged during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
