Reusable water bottle guide
We all know why we need to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics and how quickly you can get through plastic water bottles when you’re on the move, camping, or even just out and about. And yes, the rumours about how little of our recycling gets recycled are true, as confirmed by Greenpeace. The good news is that there are some brilliant brands leading the way in the reusable water bottle market. From extra wide-mouthed bottles and vacuum insulation to must-have fashion accessories in all shapes, sizes and colours, water bottles are the new eco-friendly investment piece.
It's rare not to be able to find a way to refill your water bottle, but the Refill app is a handy addition to your smartphone while you’re out and about. Not only will it tell you the nearest place to fill your bottle, no matter where you are, you’ll also find info on plastic-free shopping, discounts on coffee when you take your own cup and much more.
Which type of water bottle is the safest?
Reusable water bottles come in several different materials, all with different properties and eco-credentials. Here are a few pointers to help you decide which type of bottle may be best for you.
Stainless steel water bottles
Pros: One of the most popular options, stainless steel is durable and can be easily recycled. One of the strong pros of stainless steel is it’s insulating properties which will keep you cold drinks cool and hot drinks warm for up to 12 hours. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s good to mention that stainless steel won’t break if dropped and dents and scratches are just signs of a well loved bottle.
Cons: Sometimes stainless steel bottles will leave you with a metallic taste and while this is normally rectified with a thorough clean, some people are just more sensitive to the flavours in their water. Stainless steel bottles are all similar in shape and you’ll find they’re a little bulkier than their glass counterparts.
Glass water bottles
Pros: With glass water bottles there’s no risk of a metallic after taste and there’s no chance of chemicals leaking into your water either. Glass water bottles are often the most stylish and they also make it easy to see how much water you have left.
Cons: Glass shatters and while many come in protective sleeves (often made from plastics), they’re unlikely to survive for long, especially if you’re an outdoor adventurer. Glass bottles aren’t designed for hot drinks and don’t offer the same insulating properties of stainless steel.
Plastic water bottles
Pros: Plastic is lightweight, comes in every colour you can imagine and is moulded unique shapes.
Cons: Hard plastic water bottles are still a popular choice; however, it’s worth thinking about how your bottle will add to the ongoing environmental impact of plastic production. Plastic is also well known for releasing chemicals and many of the impacts of that on the human body are yet to be seen. Overall, we think there are better choices available.
What does BPA free mean?
All of the bottles we’ve listed here are BPA free. BPA is an industrial chemical used in the production of some plastics which many experts claim is harmful to the body. This is why you’ll often see the phrase “BPA Free”. It’s important to remember that BPA is replaced with other chemicals in plastic production, the impact of which is debated, and that glass and stainless steel are less likely to release chemicals.
How much water should I be drinking each day?
Depending on factors such as your age, height and weight, the exact amount of water you should be drinking daily will differ. The NHS recommend in their Eatwell Guide to drink plenty of water which is around six – eight glasses (2l) of water a day.
