Visiting Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle was built during the latter half of the 12th century and is set high on a rock above the River Tees.
In the 16th and 17th century, the Castle underwent two sieges. The first attack was from Mary Queen of Scots during the Rising of the North, and the second was from the Parliamentary artillery during the Civil War.
Today you can visit the castle’s sensory garden and benefit from beautiful views of the Tees Gorge and take your dog along on the adventure with you.
There is plenty of space for kids to explore. There are picnic benches and a small selection of snacks and drinks available.
There are car-parks in the town, the nearest one around 500 meters from the castle. There is an accessible toilet behind the shop for visitors.
