A wonderfully secluded campsite hidden in the Welsh hills.

Rhandirmwyn (pronounced ran-dee-mo-n) Club campsite lies just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park. The name means ‘Valley of the minerals’ and is a lead mining area in the Towy Valley.

The campsite is situated in the middle of the valley and the lively River Towy run alongside it. The campsite is spacious and well set out with excellent facilities. Surrounded by hills and trees it’s ideal for families or individuals interested in walking, cycling or just relaxing.

There are many beautiful hill and river walks within easy reach of this campsite. The Cambrian Way passes through the edge of the site. The circular all-ability access trail in Cwmrhaeadr Forest, one-and-a-half miles from the campsite is perfect for cyclists. There are two nice pubs in the village, your reward for completing the steep climb up to them!

Head south from the campsite to the Usk reservoir in the National Park. An eight-mile trail wends its way around the shore. Fishing is available here too. The nearby Glasfyndd Forest also has great walking and cycling tracks.

Llyn Brianne reservoir is also worth a visit. The road around the reservoir has some breathtaking views. Also visit the subterreanean world of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales. As well as the caves you can visit the dinosaur park, shire horse centre and the Iron Age village. The 13th century hillside Carreg Cenne Castle is south of the campsite near the village of Trapp.

Don’t miss a visit to the RSPB Dinas Nature Reserve where you can spot red kites. You can see more red kites as well as ravens and buzzards at Gigrin Farm Bird reserve in the market town of Rhayader.

We stayed here for a week in August and having four children and a dog we found the site very quiet, probably more suited for couples and not families. The staff were friendly and the facilities spotlessly clean, although there were only 3 showers (one which didn't really work) so if site was full this could be a problem. There are plenty a of beautiful long walks to complete and the birds of prey were a fabulous site to watch. There is very little light pollution making the night sky an awesome sight! The pub up the road was small and cosy with lovely food , plus free wifi. No phone signal at all so paid for site wifi but this was intermittent even though we were only 50 yards from reception. The site shop stocks your essentials but is pricey - nearest shop is a co-op in Llandovery 7 miles away. Overall we had a good stay because we were geared up for long walks and rubbish weather! If you have younger children this site may not be suitable as it is so remote with nothing close by to offer children apart from walks (which we all loved!).

What a fabulous holiday. We stayed for a week and wish it was longer. There was wildlife everyday, friendly people, excellent facilities, walks from the campsite for every ability, enough food from the shop to keep you going. Perfect! Really hope we can get back there very soon. Highly recommended. Thanks very much to the wardens for doing such a great job.

“Yet another fabulous weeks holiday at this superb site. Friendly welcome from the wardens who maintain the site to a remarkable standard. The scenery is absolutely stunning and there are some fabulous walks along the river Towy in both directions as well as some more strenuous ones. Can highly recommend this site for anybody who appreciates nature and beautiful scenery. We will definitely be returning.”
