Twenty-two miles from the US mainland Catalina Island has a laidback attitude, a rustic charm and unusual array of wildlife. For campers there are five campsites to choose between, some with seaview pitches and many offering a wonderful sense of seclusion.
With a 3,800-resident community, the island is familial, orderly and strife-free. No tattoo parlours or fast food joints here – they’re strictly taboo. Even the street names are dignified: Sunny Lane, Pebbly Beach Road, Bonita Way.
