Generally speaking, innovation is regarded not only as desirable but a must when it comes to developing camping gear. Sadly, true innovation is not common despite claims in some quarters that progress is ‘revolutionary’. Rather than painted on a huge canvas, such as the introduction of Gore-Tex 40 years ago, innovation at the moment is in the detail, rather like miniature portraits. That’s no bad thing in uncertain economic times and most manufacturers’ claims now centre on performance, quality and value rather than sweeping changes.
