Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex is possibly the single most important Roman site in Britain and its in-house museum makes fascinating viewing. We ignored the modern buildings constructed to protect the excavation and quickly lost ourselves in a treasure trove of finds. Alongside those footprint-marked ceramic tiles was a bowl crudely scratched with its owner’s name, a golden signet ring belonging to Tiberius Claudius Cataurus, a skeleton that was buried in the rubble of the destroyed palace and a reconstruction of a typical Roman room – not to mention reams of information about the palace’s history and discovery.
