Their eyes lit up as we gathered around the tree. It was what we had all come to see. Slowly the tree opened its eyes… and began to speak. Children all around us were in awe, our two boys included, as the tree proceeded to tell us a fairytale. Unfortunately I have no idea what it was saying, as it was all in Dutch, but our children – William (then six) and Toby (four) – regardless of their first language, were enthralled nonetheless. This is one of the key attractions at Efteling, a fascinating fairytale-filled wander through natural woodland, meeting well-known characters such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin and Cinderella along the way. At the very heart of the experience is the talking Fairytale Tree, which tells a different story almost every time you visit.
